Re: Windigo Store

Ingo-

We landed via seaplane in Windigo on our most recent trip out. One member of our hiking party has SEVERE motion sickness, so we stayed in Windigo on night #1 so she could sober up from her Dramamine-induced stupor... thus explaining the Windigo store inventory.

I had roughly 24 hours to bum ...

Re: Animals Anyone?????

After we saw the mother and single calf, we still heard reports/sightings of a mother with twins in the area over the next two days... maybe there were two moms with babies around Washington Creek?

If not, I hope the little one was just hiding in the woods somewhere, and not found by wolves...

Re: Animals Anyone?????

Mother moose and calf came THROUGH our campsite (shelter #1) at Washington Creek on July 23rd, 2010. Unsure if this was the mother with twins that has been seen around. Only one baby with her that night! Quite a sight!

Re: Itinerary questions for a first visit

Stonesthrow--

Hugginin is beautiful, and we didn't see a SOUL out there the last week of July 2010. Campsite #1 is THE BEST. The west loop going up seems longer and more difficult than the east loop seemed coming back to Windigo--the home stretch was a breeze--the going up was pretty rooty and ...

Re: Island Mine Water Availability?

Just got back the last week of July 2010.

Water was there, but scarce... a couple trickles at best, but Katadyn Hiker did it's thing, and we had plenty to go around.

I agree with you, DonNewcomb--Island Mine was not the best stop on this year's itinerary according to me either. I think it would ...

Re: Trail Difficulty

Some trails are difficult. Depends on your physical ability, stamina, endurance, etc.

I'm nearly 30, and not in the best of shape (is round a shape? ), but with a carefully-weighed out pack (27 lbs.), lots of water, hiking poles, and no big rush to kill yourself each day, it was fine.

I ...

Re: Breakfast ideas

Mtn. House blueberry granola was good for the first few days, then it got old.

I think I actually ate my "dinner" for breakfast, and had my "breakfast" for dinner one night just to change things up-- all depends if you're willing to eat stroganoff with your morning coffee!

Re: What type of jacket?

I would agree with the raingear being a must.

I had a pack cover, but I also lined the interior of my pack with a light, heavy-duty black trash bag (just in case).

I watched IR's weather like a hawk for a week before my trip, and "chanced" not taking rain pants, knowing I'd have a dry set back in ...

Re: trekking poles

Just got back from IR the last week of July 2010, and the poles were one of the best things I brought with me. BY FAR.

I couldn't muster the idea of dropping a ton of $ on fancy poles without knowing if I'd like them a lot or not, so I bought 2 Coleman Anti-shock poles from Target. Less than $30 ...

Re: Lantern

Just got back the last week of July 2010, and the sun was below the horizon around 9:45 each night, and dark by 10:15. I brought my Princeton Tec Scout headlamp, and I used it for a couple of minutes each night. We usually sacked out before dark!

Re: Raingear

Just got back, and ended up only taking a packable Red Ledge jacket. I couldn't stand the pants. It sprinkled on two mornings, but neither one was enough to bust out the rain gear. Still glad I had it though--you never know when IR will get nasty!
