Re: Restaurant in Copper Harbor area??
I ate at the Mariner and Harbor Haus in August, 2010 and both were very good. I ate at the Mariner the night I returned from Isle Royale and ate every morsel off my plate. I practically licked the salad bowl...boy was it good to eat some real vegetables!

Re: IR in Fall?
Thanks for the sleeping bag liner info. I have a Western Mountaineering Alpinelite down sleeping bag that I love with a waterproof compression sack. I also have some WM flash pants. I look like a charcoaled marshmallow but boy are those pants warm! The liner is a great idea as well. I work for an ...

I stand corrected on the MiniWorks water filter. I was thinking of the HyperFlow filter. The MiniWorks is a great filter.

Re: IR in Fall?
Rae, I was looking at the last week in September. I live in Arkansas and my family lives in Lower Michigan. I thought that I might do IRNP and then going down to visit my family. A lot of depends on time off from work and weather. I met some really great people when I went last year. Ya never know ...

Re: IR in Fall?
Sounds exciting except for the getting dark early part....unless of course it was a clear sky and a full moon! I was thinking of going the last week in September. Thanks for the comments. Keep 'em coming!

Re: Trip Advise - First Timer!
My first trip to the Island was last year and I am a seasoned (older) hiker and okay. I would also recommend you get out with a full pack and get used to carrying weight. Some of the Osprey packs have interchangeable hipbelts and shoulder harnesses so you can get a great fit for your waist and torso ...

IR in Fall?
I backpacked Isle Royale for the first time last mid-August (5 days, 4 nights). It was one of the greatest things I have ever done. I even wrote a story about it for an outdoor retail store that I work at. I am thinking of trekking up there again (I live in Arkansas) this year except I thought about ...

Re: Ideas for a 4 night stay
My first trip was August 2010. I did a solo backpack trip and had only 4 nights. I am a slower hiker but really enjoyed my itinerary: Day 1 - Rock Harbor to 3 Mile (via Tobin Trail) Day 2 - 3 Mile to Lane Cove Day 3 - Lane Cove up to Greenstone Ridge with a trip up the Ojibway Tower then Daisy Farm ...

Re: HELP: Trip Planning (First Timer)
I am just a newbie (1st timer) but here are my thoughts: 1) I drove from Fayetteville, Arkansas this summer and only WISH my trip would have been 8 1/2 hours. I think that is the best way to go as you can carry all of your gear easily and your fuel (although you can probably buy some in Houghton, CH ...

DP89 - I hiked from Three Mile to Lane Cove on Friday, 8/20. Did my friend and I borrow a tarp from you? Her tent was filling up with water but I had one of best naps ever that day in my tent!

Re: Rock Harbor to Lane Cove
I am 52 and a pretty slow hiker with a 30+ pack. I hiked it last week in the rain from Three Mile (a total of 5 or so miles) and it took me about 3 hours which was great for me. I was wondering about the naked woman comment as I stood naked in Site #2 last week. Everything was wet and wearing ...

Re: Queen Held Up on Isle Royale by Storms
I lucked out on my first outgoing and returning trips. I left on Thursday, Aug 19th and sailed on calm waters. I watched the Queen come in late Wednesday (from my motel room at King Copper) evening after making 2 trips that day. My return trip was on Monday, Aug 23rd. The waves were a little higher ...
