Thanks for the input! We'll probably add a side trip, like you suggested, and this fits pretty well with what we were looking at already. This is our first trip to the area, and we don't want to make it TOO rigorous, so this sounds like a good plan! Thanks again!

We will be staying in Grand Marais our first night (the 13th) and will need to get to the ferry the 14th. I haven't had a chance to try Harriot Quarels yet, will try there tomorrow and let you know what I find out.

Working out an 8-day itinerary to cross the island from Windigo to Rock Harbor. Would like to try to leave ourselves a 1-day cushion in there in case of weather (hate to miss our flight home!). Any expert opinions out there?

There are 3 of us backpacking the length of the island in August, but have yet to figure out a good way to get back and forth from the airport (Duluth). Any suggestions? Apparently Happy Times Bus Tours used to travel that, but they no longer run that route. Renting a car and having it sit for the 8 ...
