Re: data Minong

I will backup the other comments, the section from Little Todd to North Desor is VERY tough on the body, but it is relatively short compared to the North Desor to Windigo. I put them as even in difficulty. An analogy: the first is a half marathon race, the latter a full marathon completion. I cannot...

Re: Late September/early October highlights

That is my favorite time to go. I usually try to take the last boat back. Like Tom said, Island Mine area is spectacular.

Re: Electronics

Ingo, a quick tip from experience... my first canoe trip filming in a canoe with a running camera I used a pole mounted behind me and the footage was not good because it magnifies all of the movement of the canoe being that it is vertical and the pole "swings" more than the canoe. I determ...

Re: Minong and water conditions

I will not comment on the itinerary as I really cannot fathom attempting it. I would cut out some sections and allow myself more time to enjoy it, but you have been to the island and know what it is like, know your body and what you enjoy. If you had not been to the island, I would say more on the i...

Re: TR: 7/14-7/19 2018 – Canoe paddle of the NE corner

Nice report Tom. Great weather too! Glad you were able to complete your mission this time. Wow, what a ship! Caribou is a great campground, but not during the busy season. I wish they would move the one tent site there away from the shelters and to the south side. That would make it more friendly to...

Thanks for the report! Those were some long days. I always plan a day off at Siskiwit Bay, a GREAT place to spend a day!

Thanks for the report!
We made the switch many years ago due to my Dad getting too old to backpack and I certainly do not regret a single moment. It gave me a much wider appreciation of the island and Lake Superior.

Re: Algae bloom alert in effect for all of Chickenbone Lake

I have only heard of blooms at Chickenbone Lake befoer (I could be wrong). If staying at Chickenbone West, Lake Livermore is a short hike for water. I did that last time there was a bloom and I was there.

Re: Colorado Hikers to Isle Royale

Grand Portage Isle Royale Transportation Lines rents canoes. they are $30 per day $175 week 17' aluminum canoe w/paddles and 2 PFDs. (Does not include transportation to or from the island). I would think your best bet for the first time is the McCargoe to Chippewa or Malone Bay route. The Belle Isle...

Re: 1st time ever! Input please

That is a nice itinerary. As said, that first day will be a long one. I would definitely take the Tobin Harbor trail and cut down to the Rock Harbor trail as it is easier and thus, faster. Leaving Daisy and going back via the Greenstone is a pretty easy walk once up. Plan on stopping at Mount Frankl...

Re: NPS officially moving forward with introducing new wolves to IRNP

I'm thinking they may have to study how/where to capture them and how/where to introduce them. It might not be in my lifetime :-)

Re: Shelters

You can see on the National Geographic map of the park, all the campgrounds with existing shelters have been carved out of the wilderness designation, which allows the park service to maintain and replace existing structures in those areas. I like the theory, but I'm not sure it's 100% true. There ...
