Re: link to some of our trip pics

Thanks! And thanks for the correction about the loons / ducks - hee hee! I'm so goofy! One mistake I made was to leave our field book behind (for weight reasons). With all of the ducks and wildflowers, I was immediately regretting that decision! We're planning a trip to Mammoth Cave and Shenandoah N...

link to some of our trip pics

In case this cold weather had anyone already missing the island ( :D ), I thought some of you might like seeing pics from our family trip to Isle Royale this past summer. It took me a long time to finally do something with them, but doing so made me want to go back already! Some of the later pics mi...

Re: our family's trip report for June 25 - June 30, 2011

Thanks Tom! Yeah, I don't really know that it could have gone any better than it did. Everyone enjoyed it and even my reluctant husband mentioned to me last night that he was really glad he had done it. I think we went very well-prepared and got lucky with nice weather. My 6-year old is totally done...

Re: Big questions on taking my little children to IR

Hi. We just got back from Isle Royale with our 6, 8, 11, and 15 year old children. The little ones were very newly 6 and 8. Here's a link to our trip report to give you some info about what we did - http://isleroyaleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1538 . I spent many months planning our trip and ...

Re: Seeking advice re headnet / bug screen

We were there June 25 - June 30. Near the (southern) shore, we didn't need bug repellent or head nets. When we ventured inland, we used the cheap $5 head nets and they worked very well, especially since they weigh next to nothing. For bug repellent, we used Natrapel which is 20% Picaridin. We brough...

Re: Greenstone/Indian Portage June 22-26, 2011

As we were driving up through the rain, I was thinking about you and wondering how you were doing, hoping you weren't getting hit by storms. Our first couple days, I asked solo men we encountered "Are you by any chance Jerry"? None of them were. ;-) Happy to hear how much you got accomplis...

Re: our family's trip report for June 25 - June 30, 2011

I know - there is so much to report on, and I feel like even with my long report that I missed a bunch of things! jerry - I think you have to plan a "surprise" trip for your family! I was actually starting to panic because my husband hadn't started packing his stuff until a couple days bef...

Neat. BTW, I enjoyed reading your report. It sounds like you had nice, full hiking days and got to see a lot of the eastern side of the island!

Re: Trip around the eastern part of the island

We just got home last night from our Isle Royale / Northern Wisconsin trip and I haven't had time to write up a trip report yet, but I thought I'd check in quickly to read any new posts. We stayed at Moskey Basin on June 26 too!!! We were there for two nights (June 25 and June 26) in shelter #4. (So...

Re: Seeking advice re headnet / bug screen

Is DEET the only repellent that keeps them away? Last summer, I was out in very buggy woods and put some (~35%) DEET bug repellent on. It absolutely drove me crazy and I hurried back so I could wash it off. I felt like I had things crawling on my skin - it was really weird and creepy. We're bringing...

jerry, I'll keep my eyes open for you but we may end up seeing you on your way back (if you're going back to RH) - you'll probably be cruising right past us! We're leaving on Wednesday evening for the UP and assuming all goes well, will be on the Sat, June 25 boat over, so you'll be a few days ahead...

Re: My packing list & weights

Thanks for posting your list. It's very helpful to see, and I'm happy that it pretty closely matches mine. One thing I noticed is that you don't have shorts on it. We've packed shorts as well as long pants. Do you wear the kind of pants where the legs zip off or do not find much of a use for shorts ...

Re: close to going; a little nervous; any final words of wis

Okay, we'll make every attempt to fit in that second tent. I guess we will be spoiled in that our first trek will be by boat rather than foot and then we'll be in that first location for two nights, eating down some of our food without having to carry it anywhere. Yeah, I feel a lot better with the ...

close to going; a little nervous; any final words of wisdom?

So we're setting off next week and things are shifting from "in theory" to "reality". We changed our trail plans again and I'm happy with where we ended up, so that makes me feel good. Our new plan gives us more wiggle room in case of sore feet, bad weather, etc. and cuts down th...
