Re: Itinerary Suggestions

DeHiker,

The sea plane will pick-up/drop-off in Washington Harbor-Windigo(as well as Tobin Harbor), should you desire.

You can take the Ranger III initially to RH(with your fuel), and come back with fuel all used or given to other hiker/paddlers, before you fly into Houghton, as another option.

Re: 1936 Calendar

Tom, there is quite a water level difference in your May 2010, and the one in my post from Aug 2010 :!:

Thanks for posting photos, Tom and Hooky. Anyone else care to share?

Re: Female Gear List 1st Timer Isle Royale

The list you already have, has plenty of layers to get you through, should you have to "hunker down" with everything on and in your sleeping bag. The Nano makes a good pillow. You can also have it draped over your feet or shoulders(inside or out) to supplement your sleeping bag at night. I...

Re: September Canoe Trip

Ingo, #4 is a good beginning. McCargo to Malone Bay have relatively easy portages. Pike always seemed hungry on Lake Richie and Wood Lake. :) I enjoyed/appreciated this year of your calendar 8) , only 11 more days and we'll have to move on to another. Perhaps you and your daughter should plan one wi...

Re: Female Gear List 1st Timer Isle Royale

jillbord, I have usually found in the initial days, of a 7-10 day hiking trip, the appetite is slightly diminished, but after three or four days, one gets their "trail legs" and the metabolism kicks in. I always take an "extra" days food for "the lady"(possible weather ...

Re: Female Gear List 1st Timer Isle Royale

I usually plan on two pounds per day of food, goes back to my readings of Colin Fletcher, I think. Most estimates that I recall relate 5000 cal per day for average hiker to consume. I suppose that is close - to slightly more than I would normally consume in a day. I think 1 pound of food per day is ...

Re: Itinerary Suggestions

Hello DEHiker, One suggestion of mine would be to purchase your map through this organization: http://irkpa.org/shop/maps-charts , if you have not already purchased one. The hiking/canoe package is a good deal, you get the map, book, and park checklist of birds, animals, etc. The book and map are gr...

Re: NPS will not meet Senator Peters Wolf rescue timeline

From "un-trammelled" to "test tube"; man has nearly "test tubed" the planet to the point of extinction now! The wolf problem is not "sustenance", it's genetics. What is adding caribou to the equation supposed to resolve? Most things man tries to "fix"...
