I took a trip a month ago where myself and my two companions had hammocks. We used tree straps.
We found that not all sites were good for hammocks, though for us the group sites were the best.
Technically it's up to each park to allow hammocks or not, but I work for the NPS and I know a lot of ...

Re: TR - 8.4-8.7 2012 - Feldtmann Loop [counter clockwise]
Nice report. Two thoughts:
1. Those aren't rasberries; they are thimbleberries. I am sure you came across rasberries too, but there are fewer of them on the island.
2. Anyone know the rules about use of group sites by six or less people? I suppose there is no harm, as long as an actual group does ...

Thanks.
The stretch from Feldtmann to Siskiwit feels longer than it is because of the lack of a water source. Also, I feel in a normal year the stretch from the tower to Siskiwit would be heavy with skeeters, due to its swampiness, but I just got lucky this year.

TR - 8.4-8.7 2012 - Feldtmann Loop [counter clockwise]
This trip has been a year in the planning. We wanted to go last year, but by the time we tried to get boat reservations there were not enough spots for the amount of people we had in our small group. Also, last year I had planned us to do the Greenstone west to east, but I changed our course for ...

Re: Camping in Grand Portage, MN
Thanks for the advice, I'll toss the options at my backpacking group and see what the ideas and concerns are from them. I have to say that camping around a bunch of RVs doesn't sound that great, or even good.
Every time I've been there, there were never more than four or five RV's there.

Camping in Grand Portage, MN
Long time listener, first time caller. (Been trying to get to IR for a few years, finally doing it)
So myself and my three backpacking buddies will be hitting Grand Portage around 20:30 on Aug 3rd and have reservations on the Sea Hunter for Aug 4th @ 08:30. I know we can park our car for ...

Re: Duluth, MN
There are many things to do in the Twin Cities besides the mall. It's just a big mall.
+1 to that.
If you want to have a good time in the cities see if there is a concert playing in near downtown Minneapolis that you want to attend and get a hotel room there, it'll be MUCH more enjoyable than ...

Re: Off-Trail Hiking to Hay Bay
just keep the lake on your right going and the lake on your left coming back. I find if you just remember markers it's easy enough.
If I make this trek it'll be on about 2 weeks, so I'll let you know

Off-Trail Hiking to Hay Bay
Has anyone ever bushwhacked from the Island Mine Trail over to Hay Bay to spend a night there? I haven't seen it listed anywhere that it's not allowed, but I also haven't read that it is allowed for non-boaters to camp there for a night.
I see via the backcountry zones sheets that it's allowed to ...

Re: The Top 3 Best and Worst Campgrounds (Trail Accessible O
The itinerary I had made out for my group this year has us swinging up to S Desor for a night, but I'm rethinking that after all the bad reviews of it. I think I'll have us swing west instead and land back in Windigo before doing the Huginnin Cove Loop the next day.

I haven't seen the area but it appears to me that right after you cross that creek the graveyard will be on your right.
I'll be doing this loop in a few weeks and I'm glad I ran across this info
