Re: Circumnavigate Kayak Questions

I've circumnavigated the island now 5 times. In as little as 5-6 days and as long as 10. The longer the better for sure. However, my advice, without several lake superior kayaking trips under your belt, I would not advocate a circumnavigation of Isle Royale, and certainly not solo. I've been around ...

Back in the sea kayak saddle this month!

It's been too long! Think last time circumnavigating IR was back in 2010! Ugh...well I'm ending that stalemate this month! I'll be back on IR from August 1st to August 8 :)) Not sure on my route yet but I'll most likely be going around the island around Blake and doing some fishing in the deep ...

Re: suggestions for 16 day kayak trip

Heck with that amount of time, Id definitely recommend a circumnavigation. With 16 days, that would give you a lot of time for exploration. I realize you don't want to do big mile days, but that would offer you a leisurely pace. I've kayaked the island extensively and circumnavigated 3 times. There ...

Re: Pike fishing and kayaking from RH to McCargoe cove

Im not against paddling rec boats by any means, but like I said, I wouldn't suggest it even trying to be conservative with your weather observations. Especially when paddling committed sections. No offense tree rattt, but I would never suggest someone place their gear in a contractor bag and expect ...

Re: Pike fishing and kayaking from RH to McCargoe cove

Flyguy... Lake Superior is always cold and June, you can expect the waters to be absolutely fridgid. Especially after we had another harsh winter up there. That being the case, I wouldn't suggest kayaking the open water from Rock to McCargo unless your paddling a sea kayak with experience in the ...

Re: Apostle Islands

One word....GO! We've paddled there several times. One of our trips was part of a kayaking video by Justine Curgenven, "This is the Sea" part 4.... http://www.cackletv.com/sea-kayaking-dvds/this-is-the-sea-4/ This was our 3rd or 4th trip to the area and we finally got out to Outer Island. Yes, the ...

Re: Visitor perception of "private" areas on Isle Royale?

Interesting. Well we encountered that "resident" at Fisherman's home some years back. My wife and I have had the pleasure to paddle around the island several times and we've ducked into and poked our nose into some very cool private areas, however, we've always remained respectful. At Fisherman's ...

Re: Origami Kayak

I've seen them and spoke with others that have paddled them, but I woulndnt buy one for tripping just based on reasons that it's a SOF and could damaged easier than a poly or glass boat, there are no bulkheads and you need to use float bags which would take away from internal storage, not to mention ...

Re: Little Siskiwit River

I'd love to get back back and explore some of those areas...I have the coordinates, I'll have to check my records.....on our last kayaking trip up to IR a few years back, we were tooling around back in Chippewa Harbor and heard a very loud waterfall (I've heard many) and it was quite a ways back ...

Re: Portage from Rock Harbor to Duncan Bay

I really like the Duncan Bay area and have stayed at the narrows more than others, however, I like Duncan bay better...definitely more secluded and you don't get the fishing boat traffic. Most fisherman and other boaters on the island have more than accomodating with us and we've enjoyed many we've ...

I'll second those expresso beans! Gotta say, I really love the mornings on IR and try to take advantage of the serenity and a nice cup of coffee! Unless we have a 20+ mile paddling day scheduled, then its pack and go....

Re: How do you include fresh fish in your menu plan?

Yep, I use the Emrod for trolling on Superior and have landed some pretty big salmon and lake trout. Perfect setup.
