Thunderstorms
Anybody ever been stuck in a thunderstorm on IR (or anyplace else for that matter)? In the past we either car camp (where we can leave if we need to) or plan short backpacking traps locally where we can be pretty sure about good weather. Planning now on a week long trip on IR and that leaves to ...

Re: Starting to worry!
So for what it's worth, I decided to pull my kids out of school and move my trip to the first week of September. I hear the bugs are pretty gone by then, is that a true statement?

Rain gear recommendations
Hi all,
I'm planning a trip to IR the first week of September. My family and I backpack frequently, but always do short local trips when we can (mostly) plan for good weather. The idea of spending a week on IR and not being able to predict the weather is having me think about rain gear. I've read ...

Re: Starting to worry!
Dang ... this is really giving me second thoughts. Not so much cause of myself, I can put up with them. But I really like for backpacking trips and the outdoors to be a positive experience for my kids. I'm worried that if my 10 year old daughter spends a week getting eaten alive, she'll never want ...

Starting to worry!
Hi all,
My family and I have a trip to Isle Royale coming soon, taking the Ranger III on August 5th and planning a 7 day backpacking trip. I chose August because I heard the bugs were mostly gone by this time (and it's before the kids return to school in Sept).

Trip Itinerary & question
My family and I are making our first trip to IR this August and we'll be doing the classic newbie route. On our arrival via the Ranger ship we'll camp overnight at Rock Harbor campground. Bright and early the next morning we'll catch a water taxi to Chippewa Harbor. We might camp there that night ...

Calories per Day
Hi all,
My family and I will be doing a 6-night backpacking trip on the island this August. We backpack frequently, but always at local trails over night or two nights at most ... which means we routinely over-pack our food and eat in luxury since we can afford the weight. Since this is obviously ...

Kids on Isle Royale
Hi all,
Just curious how many folks bring their kids on their trips to Isle Royale? Are children a fairly common site on the island, or fairly rare? My two are 6-1/2 and 10 and I know they always enjoy their run-ins with other kids on our camping trips. Just curious!

Why no campfires?
I just finished some reading on the park site and it seems that most sites do not allow campfires (and none of the sites I was looking at staying). Does anybody know why this is? I've never been to a park where I can't light a fire, and we usually spend 3 hours a night starring at one. I'm sort of ...

Family Trip this August
Hi all, first time posting for me.
Each year my family goes on a 1-2 week camping trip someplace in the country; this year we're considering Isle Royale. My children (ages 10 and 6) are veteran campers, but we still try to keep our hikes between sites on the shorter side (because they are still ...
