Re: Great Northern Loons on Chickenbone
Tom: Just happened on this posting, and was wondering whether you have an update on the nesting loons and/or the portage restriction. We hit that 1.2 mile portage from McCargo to Chickenbone in 2011 with kayaks and gear, and I'd like to know that the exercise was for a good cause.

Re: Water Shoes vs. Waterproof Shoes
Any results to share from all these "test" ideas? Sounded like a lot of good possibilities, so I was hoping to see some of you folks sharing your results and conclusions. Three of us paddled/portaged across IR in 2011. One wore sandals for both paddling and portaging, one wore sandals for paddling ...

Re: Portaging regulations into inland lakes?
In late July 2011, 3 guys and 3 kayaks, came from Grand Portage, checked in at Windigo, put ashore at McCargoe Cove, portaged and paddled through 8 inland lakes to Chippewa Harbor. Our boats were clean coming to the island and we did not paddle Superior before hitting the inland lakes. Chippewa ...

Re: suggestions for canoe trip
http://isleroyaleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1619 Dawn: Ingo provides excellent advice, as do many of the posters on this forum. The above link is to a trip report for our kayak portage and paddle trip from McCargo to Chippewa Harbor via Lake Siskiwit. We were on the island for 6 days in late ...

Canoecopia in Madison March 9-11
Just retired, schedule is tight and so is money, so it looks like this will be the first Canoecopia in several years that I will miss. Not much I haven't seen before in the exhibits, but last summer was my first IR adventure, and I was hoping to catch up with some of you guys from the forum and ...

Re: 2012 early trip itinerary thoughts?
Just an FYI, fishing in Chippewa Harbor requires a Michigan fishing license, but no license required for the inland lakes on your itinerary. Thanks to my trip partners last July, I can attest to the tasty northern and walleye in Whittlesey, tasty northern in Richie and Chickenbone. Wood Lake looked ...

Thread naming standards for Trip Reports (Please review!)
I may be in a minority, but it would certainly be helpful to see some "what, where, when" info in the subject lines for Pictures and Trip Reports. Without it, I find it difficult to do research for future adventures, or just return to items that I previously found interesting or want to identify for ...

Re: Paddling Reports re "5 Fingers" NE end of IR?
Thanks for the feedback, guys. Sounds like that would be an interesting "corner" of IR to explore, and with proper preparation, could be done relatively safely. Damon has identified some specific destinations for on-land hikes or destinations which are intriguing. I'm looking forward to more reading ...

Re: Paddling Reports re "5 Fingers" NE end of IR?
Yes, John, I had read your report, which included further encouragement for avoiding the Duncan to Tobin portage. I'd like to paddle around Blake Point, but there is the little matter of Lake Superior's fickle weather. Not sure just when, where, and how we would make the determination which route we ...

Re: Paddling Reports re "5 Fingers" NE end of IR?
Thanks for the response, Ingo. Seems like we're trying to follow you around the island, albeit a few years behind. I'd gladly trade that long, steep portage for a chance to paddle around Blake Point. Rounding Blake Point begs the question of weather assessment, appropriate equipment, preparation ...

Voyageurs NP--Suggested links, reports, forums?
Considering a kayaking trip to Voyageurs National Park next summer. Certainly not expecting the wilderness experience of IR, or even BWCA, but it would offer paddling, camping, fishing, history, and little, if any, portaging. I have found the Voyageurs NP website and their annual newspaper (//The ...

Paddling Reports re "5 Fingers" NE end of IR?
I'm interested in the paddling/portaging route referred to as "The Five Fingers" water route in Jim DuFresne's fine guidebook. This would cover 13.5 miles from McCargoe Cove to Rock Harbor, then we might add a loop down to Moskey Basin and back to Rock Harbor. We did a 6-day paddling/portaging trip ...

Re: Isle Royale inland lakes temperatures
While paddling/portaging the last week of July, 2011, we enjoyed daily swims in Richie, Wood, Whittlesey, and Chippewa Harbor. Chippewa was the most "refreshing." No problems while swimming, but on two occasions, partners attracted significant numbers of leaches while standing in water wearing ...

Just checking to see whether forum users are putting their money where their questions are being answered.
Is this a day of encouraging news about my fellow IR adventurers?
Or a day of disappointing news about the self-centered nature of mankind?
