Re: Family trip planning

I have used Thermacell at home. I THINK it helps but I am never sure (maybe I would not have been bit anyway). Definitely affected by winds. I doubt you have much to fear from wolves, unless your five year old wanders quite the distance from you. If that is the case, you have all sorts of things to ...

Re: Windigo to Sugar Mt.

I agree with all comments on Sugar Mountain. I have never known when I was there or not. You will also have the option to rent a canoe and explore the harbor. Enjoy.

Re: First trip itinerary, am I crazy?

Chippewa and Moskey are two of my favorite sites. That would still leave you a long last day to catch the boat.

Re: First trip itinerary, am I crazy?

No need for cairns on any of your trails, and there will likely be none. Those trails are generally easy to follow. But I suspect they will not be clear of downfall. Another thought: If you skip hatchet and go from MB to Moskey, you can spend your last night at 3 Mile or Daisy Farm for an easier hik...

Re: Water filter

A couple of comments. First, enjoy your trip and be sure you can identify thimbleberries (and blueberries and raspberries)! Algae blooms come and go, so you will need to check for the latest news later in the year. I do not believe there have been blooms in Hatchett or Desor, but I may be wrong. But...

Thanks for the report and I am glad you have good memories. The Minong is not for the faint of heart!

Two parts of your story make me quite sad and angry--the vandalism of the outhouse and the idiot with the dog off the leash. I thought dogs were never allowed on the island, leash or no.

Re: Early June or late July?

"How muddy can the trails be throughout the year? I've had some muddy trails at the Porcupine Mountains in early May and Pictured Rocks in mid October. It would be a pain to be in that all the time, especially for first timers. " In my opinion, the Porkies are much muddier than IR, at any time. I ha...

Re: Early June or late July?

I would agree with Ingo, for the reasons he lists. In addition, the berries on parts of the island may be ripe in late July or early August, although that may be a tad early.

Re: Family trip planning

Not sure about fishing stuff. Someone here should know or check out the park service newspaper, the Greenstone. Lots of info there.

Re: Family trip planning

I agree with Kolo on east versus west. I almost always go to the west side because there is less of everything there. But I don't travel with a family or young kids. The Rock Harbor area would offer you more amenities and a greater number of easy and short day hikes. Conoeing and kayaking mike be be...

Lane Cove Trail

My brother and I are planning a late May trip(3M-LC FOR TWO NIGHTS AND RH/STOLL). I seem to recall hearing of flooding on the LC Trail due to beaver activity. Anyone experience this? How bad was it. Thanks!

Re: Feedback for Hiking Route June 15-21

You have good plan. The best plans have built-in flexibility, so you can make changes as our go. That is one reason I try to fit in a layover day. If tired or bad weather or I just want to be lazy, options abound. Look at a map and come up with contingency plans. The Feldtman Loop is a nice option to...
