Re: Venture crew group trip

On the issue of critters, I have certainly seen the camp foxes sneaking around, but i never had any issues with any of the little thieves in my many trips. I always take simple precautions and have never had a need to hang anything. It is the one place where i store food in my tent (try explaining t...

Re: Backpacking knife

For what it is worth, i bring a Leatherman, with the pliers. I use the pliers to lift hot lids and, once, when the metal shank in the arch of a boy scouts boot somehow jutted out of the boot, to remove that.

Re: Aug 2021 First timers

I like your plan a lot. My only suggestion is to consider a layover day somewhere. It will give you a lot of flexibility in the event of bad weather, sore feet or just a desire to relax.

Definitely agree on Scoville Point (although i never knew it was good for moose). You can also rent a canoe and explore around RH that way

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

in my view, if there are tent sites (barring a storm), hikers should not ask to share a shelter. But i understand why some may ask. I understand that on the AT, sharing is required, or at least the expectation. So folks may be coming to the island with different customs in mind. Covid raises a whole...

Re: One word for Isle Royale National Park

A Garmin is all i need as well. One time, my son (in the Army) was waiting for new orders and i was anxious to hear where he would be going. I wish i had coverage that time. (Actually, i was at Rock Harbor at that moment and a kind guest at the lodge shared the wi-fi password at the time (‘bullwinkl...

Re: One word for Isle Royale National Park

Interesting topic. I have mixed feelings. I too love the solitude and being disconnected. I suppose with cell coverage, i could remain disconnected; it would be my choice, although i get the temptation issue. Even the safety argument has two sides. The “pro” is obvious; it could be a life saver. But...

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste

You will be told in the ranger talk at the start of your trip that you must not use any soap—even “eco-friendly” soap—near bodies of waters.

A great route and trip. I have done it several times. You chose Todd Harbor over McCargo and neither choice would be wrong.

Re: One thing you wish you knew...

exactly what berries are edible and what are not. I had no idea what a thimbleberry was. Look it up! I was fortunate to run across a ranger at Todd Harbor who set me straight. One more one thing: I was worried about getting lost. The trails are very well marked and, for the most part, easy to follow...

Re: Decent instant coffee

Just a nag that if you French press, or use bags, with coffee or tea, the grounds or bags get packed out with you and their cumulative weight with retained water can add up over a week. I have a French press for Nalgene bottles and the result pretty much tastes like French pressed coffee generally ...

Re: Windigo side new gift shop/restaurant

i will miss sitting on the deck of the old shop after being out on the trail for a number of days. I have very fond memories of that—even the coffee and frozen pizza tasted great after hiking—and the view was great too!
