Re: wilderness stewardship plan overview

I hope they don’t implement that part of the plan either. Chippewa is my favorite campground. Like Ingo, i can’t understand the rationale behind that alternative either.

Re: Wolf troubles.

Historically, rangers have advised keeping food in tents, as best way to protect against squirrels stealing food, which was far more likely than a problem with wolves. Obviously no longer the case, but it worked for decades.

Re: Wolf troubles.

Just back from the island. The rangers handling orientation, at least at Windigo, are all over the board. The ranger told my group to hang food, unless in a shelter, or use odor proof containers (never explaining what counts). She said these rules apply for the entire island. Of course, the NPS site ...

Re: Current water availability: Greenstone Ridge trail?

Do not count on any water directly on the Greenstone. As i recall, other than close to Windigo, it is dry.

Re: Recommendations for a 4 night trip?

Hugginin is wonderful. It is a loop hike. My suggestion is to take the slightly longer side, which goes along the shore of the lake. It is much easier and more scenic than the other side of the loop.

Re: Recommendations for a 4 night trip?

i agree 100% with Ingo. I have to admit that i have done it both ways and it was always good, so the decision likely will not matter much. There is one time to definitely go counterclockwise. If you need to get into Windigo in the morning to catch a boat or plane, going, slightly, downhill from IM ...

Re: Large Clearing At McCargoe Cove

Very interesting. NPS seems to move at such a glacial pace so that i would be surprised about new tent sites without any news having leaked out. I wonder if it could be a clearing for a helicopter drop zone for lumber for boardwalks? I have seen those elsewhere on the island, albeit not with a new ...

how have crowds been so far? And rookies

Barring Covid (my wife has it at the moment), I plan to hit the island on 9/2. i will come in at windigo and then: S Desor, Hatchett, L Ritchie, Moskie and two nights at Chippewa. I think i will skip Island Mine given the low water levels.

How have the crowds been so far? The last few years have ...

august/september conditions

i head to the island on 9/2. Just saw the NPS alert about the low water at Island Mine. Anyone been there recently? Wondering it this is just the normal low water or worse than usual. NPS says to carry extra water or hike down to L Superior for water. I may hike directly to S Desor from Washington ...

i was on the island at about the same time. I rant into several “dudes” too. A pet peeve—folks walking through a campsite without asking!

favorite trail and campsite

Traffic on the forum has definitely slowed in recent years (Wish i could say the same about traffic on the island!). So here is my attempt to gin up some discussion. What is your favorite (1)trail, or trail section, and (2) campground? I will start it off.

(1) This may be cheating because it is a ...
