Re: Campsite Water Source Question

Ingo nailed it. I would add just a few comments. I have never seen Island Mine totally dry. Slow, muddy, yes, but never totally dry. If it were, in addition to trekking on to Desor, you could go down to L Superior or even the creek running down along the trail to Superior. Also, while i am sure the ...

Re: August Weather

I usually bring a lighter quilt and heavier liner. Then i plan on wearing base layers or more, as needed. In the spring, I will bring a warmer bag because i have been there for many nights below freezing. I agree with dcclark that this is very dependent on the individual,

If you stay at Rock Harbor, be sure to do the day hike to Scoville Point on the Stoll Trail. The kids will love it

Re: Trip Planning: Itinerary Help

If later in June, it may be crowded. Heck, it is more crowded than a few years ago at any time. But 3 Mile is pretty big and i am sure you will find something. Worst case, you can use an overflow site or double up at a tent site.

Re: TR: Solo Backpacking Trip to Huginnin Cove – late August, 2023

Thanks for the report, and sorry Washington Creek was so crowded. I am afraid that is the new normal. Hugginin is great. I did that in May and, like you, took the short trail in. I took the long trail back and i much preferred it.

Re: 2024 trip- Wolves

For what it is worth, i have been on the island many times and experienced one, very fleeting, glimpse of a wolf. It was when there were only two wolves left and i was at Lane Cove. In my experience on the island, wolves very rarely come anywhere near humans. Another problem is the topography of the...

Altra Lone Peak Trail Runners

I got off the island on May 25. I was very undecided whether to wear my Lone Peaks or my waterproof boots, given the time of year, expected mud, temperatures, etc. At the last minute I went with the Lone Peaks. They worked great—comfortable, super light, no blisters and quick drying when they got a ...

Re: TR: Late May 2023

That's the same kid!!! We were getting ready to cook up a pike at Siskiwit camp when he staggered in about 7:30 one night soaking wet having just fell in the drink. He came back this year to do the trail in reverse and try to find out where he went off trail (which was likely the jog in the trail h...

Re: any current moose/wolf counts?

The rangers are saying there are about 800 moose and thirty wolves on the island, but i have no idea if there is a basis in fact to these claims

Re: TR: Late May 2023

I agree there seemed to be more first timers / inexperienced hikers on the trail this May vs the last couple. I didn't find the island to be too busy for the first week, I didn't see another person for the first six days there. SO did anyone else meet the kid who fell in the Big Siskiwit River tryi...

Re: TR: Late May 2023

hooray, and thank you, for the season's first trip report! Maybe we should start a crowd-sourced, color-coded map of false reports and where we heard them, so we can figure out which parts of the Island are populated by the trustworthy. Since I take you to be trustworthy, I want to ask: What color ...

Thanks for the correction. At least some things were true! I saw a sign prohibiting firearms, but maybe it was just for a building
