I too have heard that the fire is out, but the affected sections of trail need to be checked for hazards before reopening. Hopefully this week!

I have had good success with Picaridin the past few years, although I haven't tested it on Isle Royale bugs yet (I'll have to report back in a few weeks). I took 28 from the bridge to Munising (I-123 to I-28) last year, and I thought the roads were in great shape. It was a pretty easy drive, although we didn't have a trailer. Hope your travels go well!
