Re: Dinner

Great picture, regardless.

I was in the BWCA a few Septembers ago and got my first real close up view of a flock of mergansers going about the business of getting dinner. Just as fascinating as watching a loon, only different. Watching any bird fish is incredibly fascinating to me though.

Life jackets. What a refreshing thing to read about in an otherwise bad situation.

Re: Malone Bay kayak day trips?

Thought I had a picture of the entire beach that John is recommending, but I just have a partial. It would be a great place to launch if it isn't underwater.

Re: Daisy Farm concrete foundations

I agree with treeplanter that most likely origin is the CCC camp. They were considered temporary then but they became quite large (in Island speak anyway). Here are 2 pictures of the Daisy Farm CCC Camp taken in 1938 and 1939: Daisy Farm 1939 NVIC-30-205.jpg Daisy Farm 1938 NVIC-30-131.jpg From wha...

Thanks, both! CCC origins make sense. There is a watertower in Ed's first photo that could account for the 4 concrete footings.
And from that same picture of Ed's, the apron for the dock is your second picture.

...to determine how Lake Trout are doing... ...I'd say that one is doing just fine! Imagine catching that if you were out in the kayak or a canoe. (I did catch one heck of a monster northern in Wood Lake several years back, and we had no way to get it into the canoe. The only option was to get it t...

This popped in my facebook memories from 2012 when my son and I took the first public boat trip over. We were so excited.

Re: Another First Time IR Backpacker: Itinerary Feedback Requested

I say this all the time, but I'd much rather have stops along the Lake Superior rather than on the inland lakes. I like the suggestions that Midwest Ed made regarding alternate routes.

Re: May Weather

Late May trip with my son on his birthday. Weather was cool to cold and breezy near the lake and warm inland. It rained all day on day 1 and was clear the rest of the time. It got down to freezing one night at Moskey, as evidenced by ice in our water bottles. Very few people and got bit by one mosqu...

Re: Waterproof hiking shoes...

If you can keep water out of them, they're great. If you can't, then you're looking at wet feet the entire time.

Wth the right choice of socks and gore-tex, it's my preference in cold or cooler weather. Warm weather (lows in the 50s), I like something that will dry overnight.

Great Rolph quote, IMO.
“The real value of Isle Royale, in my mind, is not that it’s some kind of untouched wilderness because that’s a myth,” Peterson said. “The value today is that it’s a system with a top carnivore, a large herbivore and a forest—none of which is being exploited by people.”

Re: Newbie Weekend Trip Input

If it were me, I'd hike to Feldtmann lake Saturday. Go watch the sunset at Rainbow Cove. Get up early and hike back to windigo to catch the Ferry. I don't have the mileage chart handy but I think it's around 7.5 miles each way. You'll get a great view from the overlook. Feldtmann is a great spot to ...
