Re: Lake Ritchie Algae Bloom

Kind of early for a blue-green bloom isn't it?

Re: Windigo Storm 6/08/21

I don't remember where I heard this, so I can't give it the proper attribution, but at any given time 1/3 of the boreal forest is horizontal.

Re: Goshawks nesting on the Greenstone

I remember Rafiki having a terrible time with them on the Minong several (many?) years ago. I think it was him who put his hat on a stick so they weren't right there in his face.

I'm a filter only person too.

A proper filter is all you really need in the back country of North America.

Those are so iconic and I've always been fascinated by the beavers and otters. If you share that point of view, here's a great video about the history of the de Havilland Beaver.

Only if you're out of state. Proof that Michigan has been gouging tourists who fish longer than I've been alive!

Re: Windigo name

Indeed, from The Place Names of Isle Royale : Windigo is a variation of an Indian word for a mythical monster which roamed the woods of the North Country to consume humans. What the book doesn't mention, but is fun to show kids and adults alike: Flip your map upside down; Feldtmann Lake is the eye,...

Re: Transportation to/from Hancock to Copper Harbor

Personally, I'm surprised a few enterprising Michigan Tech students haven't set up a shuttle business. It would be a great way to work part time, take classes and make extra money.

Re: Venture crew group trip

Getting really excited for the trip, another question... What trail maps are out there? Is the nat geo the go to map? I have not really found anything else online. I want to get a Back up for our group and it is good to have another type sometimes for comparisons. The Nat Geo map is the standard. T...

Great post(s).

That rain tarp can go a long way towards solving the sideways rain and leaking roof problems in the shelters too.

An unlikely source of photos of the Beaver in action. They don't mention it by name, but this is it, an LCM.

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

OK, so what exactly does one say to someone who is requesting to share your shelter, assuming there are no extenuating circumstances?  I also would prefer not to share a shelter even though there is only one of me.  With COVID I guess I should be able to just say I'm not comfortable sharing my shel...

Re: Backpacking knife

I don't remember when I learned about fuzz sticks, but it was a long time ago, but I didn't have a name for them. I also definitely don't make them as well as the guy in that video! A few years ago my father in law gave me a copy of a delightful book from the early 1970's called "On your own i...
