Re: BWCA - Questions and a Brief Trip Report

Been a while since last post, not hibernating, but spending time up in Chequamegon winter camping. Trip into Iron was fantastic in Fall with a couple nights being only one on lake - and if your are familiar with Iron Lake - that is a rare treat. Hope you enjoy your Cherokee Trip. I noticed you are ...

Re: Paddling the Inner Lakes

Except for Intermediate, which I visit for a quick break and continue on, I have stayed at all of the canoe campsite many times. I like them all. One major obstacle that may arise is significant West Wind generating white caps on Siskiwit that would cause safe travel between Wood and Intermediate ...

Thanks for the report, in a way I got to Isle Royale this year in a canoe living through your trip vicariously - my spirit appreciates it.

Re: BWCA - Questions and a Brief Trip Report

Looks like that South facing Island site in the middle of Cherokee... Must give some comfort that the pup can roam a little more freely and not end up five miles to the West chasing a chattering red squirrel. That Labor day weekend is the absolutely the best weekend in the entire year to make a trip ...

Re: 1936 Calendar

Hopefully you accept my excuse for the lateness of the last Month of the series - October. I was out in the Wilderness in BWCA and Chequamegon National Forest. Not Isle Royale, that trip with my Father ended up being a Cabin trip in the Porcupines due to other obligations/time frame/island ...

Re: Proposed user fee increase

Ok. As I said, I would pay the fee increase, no problem. But, after thinking about it and reading Captain Don's post, I thought about it a bit more. Where would the fee increase go???? Would it go to Isle Royale directly or into a general Park Service fund???? Like the lottery "ear marked" for ...

Glad others find this early calendar as interesting as I do!

As much as I love the fall season, not exactly excited to hear the word September right now but....

Re: Tree incident at Hatchet Lake

This happened to my party when camped at Hatchet Lake years ago so it must be a more common place for this type of danger. The campground is surrounded by a Birch/Aspen stand. A tree top snapped from top of a tree and fell on a tent vestibule while someone was in it. There was no wind and a crack ...

Re: Fishing Gear tackle box

A rubber band is always wrapped around my box. Inadvertent opening while in pack just once will lead a person to a full days worth of fabric surgery and to take future precautions.

Re: Therm-a-Rest Mattresses

Canoe Tripping is comfort level to the max. I use a Alps Mountaineering Velocity Twin air bed with Battery Pump. And extra closed cell foam pad lashed to portage pack for insulation. And yes, this closed cell foam goes between my air bed and sheets..... and I don't forget the two full-sized pillows ...

Re: First visit - kayak route labor day

Just to make sure you are aware of Ranger III options when arriving, I will repeat. You can be dropped off at Mott Island. This will save : 1 hour travel between Mott Island and Snug Harbor. up to an hour of unloading all boats, luggage, materials at Snug Habor. 1 to 3 hours paddling from Snug ...

Washington Creek Rain Event Levels

The labeled "catastrophic" Rain event last evening lured me to check out the river levels in Northern Wisconsin. Some 1000% levels in my playground. Looks like Isle Royale was partially hit with Washington Creek levels in Windigo being high. Hope the shelters are still there. http://waterwatch.usgs ...
