Re: favorite trail and campsite

Favorite trail: probably the westbound section of the Minong from McCargoe Cove to Otter Lake, mainly because Otter Lake just appears out of nowhere. You have no idea the lake is there until you find yourself on a ridge a few hundred feet above it. Favorite campground. Probably Malone, mainly for se...

Re: Winter Study update

....I wonder if global warming is also, contributing to the decline in the moose population. Moose really don't like warm weather. The moose in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (reintroduced in 1985) are at the south edge of their range. Isle Royale may be a bit better for moose, due to the being an isla...

Re: Winter Study update

The winter study was suspended on February 2nd. Unsafe ice conditions forced the team to return to the mainland. They may return this winter if cold weather returns. Very preliminary observations were that more moose calfs were noticed than last year. https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/...

Saw that. Wonder where they were dropped off? Mt. Ojibway is a long way from Windigo.

Just saw on Instagram that the 2023 Winter Study is underway. A small crew arrived on the Island on Friday, January 20th. They plan on posting periodic updates as time allows.

Re: Cultural Resource Management Plan

Pretty sure the Guest House is next to the Lodge (east) and is where you go to log onto the internet. Has a fireplace, couches, chairs, etc. Old photos on the wall, and some books too.

Edit: Also has an upstairs. Last time I was there, the stairway was roped off.

Re: Looking for a specific ISRO map

I have a Keweenaw County plat book (circa 2000). It only has a general map of Isle Royale, not anything detailed.
