Re: Inland fishing for backpackers?

I'm really not a fisherman, but did pack along a small rod/reel when we backpacked to Moskey many years back. We hiked up to Lake Richie one afternoon and spent a few hours fishing. Didn't catch anything, but had a great time and was glad I packed the fishing gear.

This popped up on Facebook this morning. The Park Service is asking for a picture and a short story, on your Isle Royale experience. If accepted, it will appear on the IR Facebook and Instagram pages.

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

Creepy. Say, was that the year that several people went missing, and the park service never solved the mystery? Yeah, it was strange. Mid-afternoon too. But McCargoe eventually filled up with other campers, so I pretty much forgot about it. Never heard that several people went missing one summer. I...

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

Depends how many people are in a shelter too. I did a lot of kayak camping 20-30 years ago. Sometimes by myself, but mostly with my buddies. Three guys, and all of our camp stuff, can fill a shelter in a hurry. We had hikers looking to share a shelter, walk by, take a look, and keep on walking. At M...

Re: One word for Isle Royale National Park

I have absolutely no knowledge of what it would take to add cell technology to the Ojibway or Isphpeming towers. But I imagine a cell transmitter would require an energy source, all of the equipment would have to be carried in on foot, and would have to be regularly serviced. Not sure if the Park Se...

Re: Isle Royale Queen III

I was going to title this thread "The Barf Barge," but figured I'd be kind to the old gal. No, I never got sick while on the boat. Good inner ear I guess, but I don't usually get sea-sick. I do remember one journey back to the mainland where we had four foot swells hitting us on the beam a...

Isle Royale Queen III

We were up at the Straits of Mackinac today to look at the "blue ice." In dry dock, I noticed the old Isle Royale Queen III, which was in service from 1989 until 2004. Took several trips over and back to IR on that boat. I guess it's being used now for "sip and sail" cruises from...

Re: Ice Bridge Formed?

The ice bridge is now gone. Looks like it lasted 7-9 days. We'll see if any wolves left the island, or any wolves came over from Ontario.

Re: Isle Royale Loons

Chippewa Harbor is the best place on IR that I've have personally experienced for hearing loons. This was in late August. Nothing beats hearing loons call at 2:00 AM.

Any coal-burning power plant produces mercury. Once airborne, it can go along way.

Re: Ice Bridge Formed?

The Canadian Ice map from February 16, 2021. The light purple called "I" is medium thick ice, meaning 15cm to 30 cm, or about 6" to 12" thick. You could drive a snowmobile to IR right now if you wanted to.

Re: Ice Bridge Formed?

When some of the wolves were going to be deposited just before winter there was some talk of penning them up for a while (to prevent an ice bridge escape) in hopes of acclimating them to their new home. Hopefully they've gotten used to and happy with their new home for a long enough period that the...

I thought about that too. And with nobody on the island this winter, pretty hard to know what's going on. I suppose if a collared wolf left IR, somebody may know about it. But that's just a guess.
