Re: Vintage Postcard Collection of IR Postcards

For the Chippewa Harbor postcard, I think it's actually a pic of Rock Harbor Lighthouse taken from the current Caribou Island campground, with the Middle Islands in the foreground.

Vintage Postcard Collection of IR Postcards

From the University of Michigan "David V. Tinder photo collection." Search for Isle Royale. The size of the resort that was on Belle Isle surprised me.

Re: Helicopter & activity on Mott Dock + Winter Study flights

That could be. In past years, the winter research team is gone by now. All the activity at Mott over the past several days suggest park infrastructure improvements are going on. Work on the Ojibway tower could be one of these projects.

Re: Ice Bridge?

One formed last week (from about McCargoe Cove to Ontario), but it broke up in the wind. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Ice Bridge?

Canadian ice map from today. An ice bridge has formed between IR and Ontario. That shade of purple means ice is 3"-6" thick, though I suspect a good wind will blow it away. We haven't seen an ice bridge in years.

Lot more activity today, February 1st. Look like ski-tracks along the bottom edge of the photo.

Snowshoe Tracks????

I just noticed what appear to be snowshoe tracks up on the Greenstone. I was wondering if the winter study had begun, so I guess it has. Or am I looking at something else? Thoughts?

Re: Amygdaloid Island

I haven't been to Amygdaloid Island since 1995. Then, and now, there is no formal trail system on the island, but you can bushwack. There is a prominent ridge on the island, that is very obvious on an aerial photo, that you can use for hiking. It's slow going, and you need to good footwear, but it ...

Re: Large Clearing At McCargoe Cove

Just looked at their management plan, and the area surrounding the McCargoe campground is designated "non-wilderness", so clearings such as this are allowed. I'll be curious as to what others think, when they get there.
