Re: Two nights at Moskey or Daisy Farm?

If you're wanting the kids to play in the water in a good, clean, safe place, it's Daisy Farm.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Isle Royale, go to Moskey. Not very good beach access or water to play in.

Re: Day trip from Grand Portage

Capt Don will follow-up with you in a few days if you send him an email or call and leave a voicemail at the office.

Like Tom said, things book up fast for the boat out of Grand Portage, so start making contact now!

Re: Future Shutdowns

As a Government employee, I can tell you that each organization has its own set of furlough rules. There are protocols for a "orderly shutdown of operations," so just because the Government might be closed on March 1st, operations will continue until they are shutdown orderly (in the case of Isle Ro...

Re: Why we need paper maps

I don't think I could orientate myself with a paper map any more...I am one of those who are too reliant on GPS.

I'm sure when the first Ford Model T hit the road, there were online articles about how "don't throw away your horse and buggy just yet!" too :D

Re: Hiking Shoes?

I always use heavy-duty boots on Isle Royale, but I know I'll usually be in very wet and muddy places. The Minong, for the most part, is dry and not very muddy since it spends a lot of time on top of a ridge. If there's a trail on the island that I would be not worrying about my trail shoes getting ...

I was told that the best way to get a hold of them is via Facebook. Did you try this? You can drop them a message there:

Re: What interior lakes would you take in a packraft to fish on?

I've heard a few people doing a pack raft on Feldtmann Lake. There's walleye in there, I know. That's a long hike with a pack raft though.

Chickenbone is the closest for packing it in, and I don't think you'd be disappointed using it there, either.

Re: Better to visit in early May, or late August

When I'm backpacking, I always go early or mid-May. There's no one on the island, and there's no bugs. Plus, I don't like heat, and it doesn't get hot during this time of year (I've even been snowed on twice, and hiked in some snow on the north side once).

Any idea of plans for 2019? Work to be done?
We sure do. We'll be finishing up the four floor (kitchen) and moving onto the next floor on the list. Work starts in July. Interested? :D

Re: Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2018

I got around to dumping the rest of the images from the webcam at the lighthouse over the past year. When it had power, it was able to capture an image every five minutes and compile them into an animated GIF. Check them out below. Specifically, the animation for the 15th of July and the 30th of Jul...

Re: Preliminary Itinerary for May 2019 with fishing and canoe questions

You're right, it's never too early to start planning an Isle Royale adventure. You're really going to enjoy that time of year on Isle Royale...no one will be there, no bugs, warm days, cool nights...it's really quite perfect. Also, smart to be cautious with a canoe on Siskiwit. From what johnhens ha...

Enjoyed your report Tom. A question about the Voyageur Brewing place. Do they serve dark brew/beer?
Yes, they've always got a a good spread.
