Re: Places to get equipment?

I've recently heard from two people that the REI Used Gear store is good. REI employees inspect everything before the post it for sale. Maybe it's worth checking out: https://www.rei.com/used

Re: Toilet Paper

They are usually stocked, but with it being closer to the park closing, the likelihood of anything being available is shrinking. So, always bring your own roll! You never know. Plus, if you still have it when you leave the island, be a "trail angel" and leave it in the last outhouse you were at...pa...

Re: Draft Cultural Resource Mgmnt Plan/Environmental Assessment

This is a big deal. This plan has been decades in the making. Thanks for posting it, John. All: if you enjoy the history and culture of Isle Royale, you'll want to review this document and provide any public input soon. The outcome of this plan could massively affect the buildings, history, people, ...

Re: Jet Skier rescued off IR

so what exactly was his plan once getting to the island?? They were just going to stay at the Holiday Inn in Windigo. :P I think it's great this person was safe (with gear) and had a plan, but I think it's foolish this person didn't listen to everyone in Grand Marais. A big shout-out to the freight...

Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2019

The restoration season has started at the Rock of Ages light house for 2019. We've had teams working the last two weeks, but the really big news is that we have our own boat now, thanks to a generous donation by the National Park Service. I'll be posting any other updates here in this thread, but fo...

Impeccable trip report, and some good pics. Thank you for sharing. Your details of some of my favorite campsites really bring me back and make me miss it.

Re: First trip itinerary, am I crazy?

McCargo Cove is beautiful, and at that time of year, it won't be very busy. You'll probably see some wildlife there, too.

West Chickenbone is also beautiful and the bugs won't be out, so it will be very enjoyable.

I'd do either McCargo or West Chickenbone before Hatchet lake.

Re: First trip itinerary, am I crazy?

As JerryB has said, these trails are well-established, and you won't lose them. They will be wet and muddy in May and June, but that's not a show-stopper at all. Hatchet Lake is kind of a boring campsite in my opinion, and I would skip it. Plus, the hike in and out of Hatchet Lake is brutal (almost ...
