Impeccable trip report, and some good pics. Thank you for sharing. Your details of some of my favorite campsites really bring me back and make me miss it.

Re: First trip itinerary, am I crazy?

McCargo Cove is beautiful, and at that time of year, it won't be very busy. You'll probably see some wildlife there, too.

West Chickenbone is also beautiful and the bugs won't be out, so it will be very enjoyable.

I'd do either McCargo or West Chickenbone before Hatchet lake.

Re: First trip itinerary, am I crazy?

As JerryB has said, these trails are well-established, and you won't lose them. They will be wet and muddy in May and June, but that's not a show-stopper at all. Hatchet Lake is kind of a boring campsite in my opinion, and I would skip it. Plus, the hike in and out of Hatchet Lake is brutal (almost ...

Re: May Weather

You're going during my favorite time of year! Comfortable during the day, and cool at night. Regarding fabric, just bring clothes and gear for a regular May day in the Midwest. Always bring rain gear. I always have a fleece and a micro-fleece. Also, a 30-degree bag would be OK with some layering, bu...

Re: Fishable Lakes Chart

What causes the mercury level to be so high in the lakes of Isle Royale? The old mines? Acid rain?

Found in the Superior Municipal Forest

Not Isle Royale, but maybe it's the wolf that crossed back in to Canada...? :o

What are you spending your dividend on? 2019 super special edition

REI dividend season is next month (mid-March). That sweet, sweet 20% coupon will soon follow. So...what is everyone who is an REI member going to spend their dividend on?

I haven't thought about it much, so I'm not sure what I'm going to buy. Last year, I bought some skiing gear...

Re: Two nights at Moskey or Daisy Farm?

If you're wanting the kids to play in the water in a good, clean, safe place, it's Daisy Farm.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Isle Royale, go to Moskey. Not very good beach access or water to play in.

Capt Don will follow-up with you in a few days if you send him an email or call and leave a voicemail at the office.

Like Tom said, things book up fast for the boat out of Grand Portage, so start making contact now!

Re: Future Shutdowns

As a Government employee, I can tell you that each organization has its own set of furlough rules. There are protocols for a "orderly shutdown of operations," so just because the Government might be closed on March 1st, operations will continue until they are shutdown orderly (in the case of Isle Ro...

Re: Why we need paper maps

I don't think I could orientate myself with a paper map any more...I am one of those who are too reliant on GPS.

I'm sure when the first Ford Model T hit the road, there were online articles about how "don't throw away your horse and buggy just yet!" too :D
