Re: Campsite Name & Access

I have stayed at Lane Cove twice. Both times, there still were several open sites when we were packing up in the morning. I guess I must have stayed there before it became wildly popular. I enjoy talking with fellow backpackers, but there also is something nice about staying in a very quiet, uncrowd...

Re: favorite trail and campsite

There are so many trails that, for one reason or another, are nice trails. The same goes for campsites. But, if you force me to distill them all down to only one of each, my picks would be:
Trail - Feldtmann Loop
Campsite - Huginnin Cove

Re: First timer looking for feedback

I agree with everything dcclark said; ships fill up fast, mileage is good as long as you've done those mileages with weight, and the Greenstone's nice views are more toward the middle (fire tower) and east (Mount Franklin) but otherwise... meh. I have hiked the entire length of the Greenstone and th...

Re: Big news for grand portage outbound ferries...

Your link answers my question. Steel and concrete works for me. How about the Windigo dock? Its still wood, as I recall. No plans to replace that, that I've heard. I don't think it needs it, that dock is pretty burly. Yep, it looked pretty sturdy to me and my buddies last May. Sent from my SM-G781V...

Re: Itinerary Feedback

Even though you have a reserved spot for the original date do NOT assume you will get picked up at Chippewa Harbor. The Voyageur does not make any intermediate campground stops unless a passenger is on their schedule for drop off or pickup. I've restated this to also potentially warn other readers ...

Re: Rain jacket or windbreaker replacement

I will throw in my two cents for what it's worth. Many years ago, I finally purchased a set of Frogg Toggs (pants and jacket) after using two other types of rain jackets for several years. I have been pleased with how lightweight they are and much less bulky than my other two rain jackets I have use...

Re: Trip plans: Windigo, N Desor, Hatchet, Malone Bay

It was a magical little place, made even better because it was unexpected. I definitely recommend checking it out. Here's a photo with my wife and hiking partner for scale. The stream continues through the large boulders at the bottom and drains into a lowland area. The coordinates on the photo are...

I just finished reading your entire 2023 Isle Royale blog. Wow! What a great read. It brought back a lot of memories from my trip with Dane and Ken, especially when you described some of the very same things we encountered, one of which was the metal tags on the trees. I also got a laugh out of your...

Re: Northern Lights time lapse from Sept '22

First time seeing the northern lights, I was so stoked! I used my GoPro to film this time lapse! The red flashes on trees are people's head lamps of course. I set the short video to a recording I made of Clair De Lune! I've got a couple stills and other photos from the trip and other parks on my pa...

Re: Am I Crazy? Swim across Tobin Harbor as short cut?

Umm... NOT a good idea. For your sake and that of your family and friends, just do the few extra miles on foot; the risks far outweigh the benefits.

Re: Crazy Idea to Circumnavigate the Island?

My buddies and I were there May 24 - May 28 (Feldtmann Loop). I, too, saw the box of cans outside of the Windigo store. There was a sign on the box that said they were free, but I think it was more of a joke... I picked up one or two of the cans, and they seemed to be empty. Sent from my SM-G781V us...
