Re: TR: 7/3-7/6, 2015 [Hiking] [RH-Lane-RH]
Update: Regarding the Cross County map that I indicated was different than what is posted on the forums here...they are handing out (at least when I was there) an older version from 2010. The version currently posted on the forums is from 2012. But get this...its a 2 sided copy...the other side has ...

Hi all...here is my trip report...spelling errors and all...this is a different type of trip for the 3 of us (myself, wife, and 14yo son). We wanted to spend more time enjoying the island and not hiking miles each day. Hope you enjoy.

Tom - Thanks for your view on the stick stove...and like I said...once boots are on the ground things may change.
Do you have any recommendations for more favorable crosscountry explorations?
Thanks!

Backcountry/CrossCountry Questions - Stick Stoves
I am soon heading back to Isle Royale for my 3rd trip. As with many of the others - i just cant seem to get enough of Isle Royale.
This trip will be a bit different. We (3) will be using hammocks and plan to obtain a cross country permit and plan on exploring the area on the northeast part of the ...

Re: Favorite Mountain House meals
you cant dehydrate them at home... but you can freeze dry them... slightly less complicated and less efficient method to what MH uses, but it can be done!
To clarify - I think you have it backwards...you can only dehydrate at home - not freeze dry unless you have some very special equipment ...

Re: Early June Update?
Thanks all...I was there last year the first week of July...no bugs at all. Just a few on Tobin Harbor trail on our last segment.
Guess one really never knows as so much depends on local moisture, temps, and winds.
As they say....Be Prepared!

Re: DEET: Spray or Lotion?
I ordered some more picaridin today...have had good luck with it. Its not as stinky as Deet and easier on your skin.
(note I also pack a small deet backup)!

Re: Itinerary August 1-6
Matt - We (family of 4) did a somewhat similar trip last July (early) as our first trip to the island. In hindsight I wish we had done less miles and spent more time enjoying the island. I think you will find the hiking on IR to be harder than a lot of other places. Trails are usually rocks and ...
