Re: Carrying Water

One thing we have done is bring 2 empty gallon water jugs. On one we had "Dirty" and the other "Clean" (in sharpie). I walked to the lake filled up the Sawyer bag, and "Dirty" gallon jug. Walked back to camp. At camp I hung the Sawyer from a tree so the end of the filter was just inside the opening ...

Re: Water filter

My favorite filters are made by Rapid Pure. They filter all the way down to viruses (not a big concern here), and can be frozen solid with no problems. Almost all of the other filters you have to throw away if you think they might have been frozen (even a few ice crystals will poke big holes in ...

Re: Leaving canoes?

Just called the IR NPS at (906) 482-0984 and asked.... they said that there was not a prohibition to leaving canoes etc., but we would be doing it at our own risk. My dad would probably bring a bike cable lock or two along just to be sure.

Thought this would be an easier, quicker approach (not between swampy areas from Chicken Bone). Easy- https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/xvsxKlSKrRIR1IHEbwolcCkVSmsXM-nwmAKSDXSRuAkD9sa3JInORBNvCM8=w2400 ================================================================= Hard- https://lh4 ...

Re: Leaving canoes?

Ok, I'll give them a call and see what they say. Most people that go to IR aren't going to be the type of people that would typically mess with someone's stuff. @ Tom - We are "hung up" on Chippewa, Been there several times and love it. As for the approach to Sargent, I thought of coming from Daisy ...

Re: TR:7/24-8/1/13 [Paddling] [McCargoe-CBW-Ritchie-Wood-Chippew

BTW.... We are planning another trip for this year (2019)...end of July. Expect to see some familiar faces (Steve, Shawn, Doug Sr., possibly Quincey), and some new ones (my two nephews: Alex & Caleb, possibly my "brother" Sean, and maybe one or two of my daughters). We will have to split into two ...

Re: TR:7/24-8/1/13 [Paddling] [McCargoe-CBW-Ritchie-Wood-Chippew

The next day Doug, Doug Jr., Quinn, and Tristin decided to beat it to Chippewa. They were tired of "roughing it" and wanted to get a shelter for our last two nights. They broke camp and moved quickly through Wittlesey, and into CH. Steve and I took more of our time and fished Whittlesey as we passed ...

Re: TR:7/24-8/1/13 [Paddling] [McCargoe-CBW-Ritchie-Wood-Chippew

Ok.... Better late (5 YEARS!) than never.... After the first night on Wood lake, I woke up early and welcomed the sun as it rose. We had a great view of the birch trees reflected in Wood Lake. For breakfast we found different berries around the camp site. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and ...

Re: Towing in Rock Harbor

The only successful canoe towing endeavor I have made is with two canoes tied together (a few feet apart) and then a line from each about 20' long that joined together in another 20-30' line to our boat. We loaded the rears of the canoes with cargo which lifted the fronts up and out of the water ...

Re: Big Pike! ?

We caught quite a few nice sized pike in Lake Richie. We just drifted along the edges of the weed banks and caught one just about every 20 feet (where there was good cover).
