Re: Speaking of Food

you can get spam in a pouch. lol. but, it is amazing how something you probably wouldn't consider at home tastes sooo much better fried in camp. i didn't bring it, but when some was offered i didn't turn it down.

Re: Camera Question

I used my daughters nikon coolpix. she used a newer olympus stylus tough 6000. nice cameras both. the olympus is waterproof to 10feet and she took it and did some pics while snorkeling in the galapagos. it also has a pretty slick panorama function. i think we both went 5 days with just 1 or two ...

Re: July 4-11

We just got off island thursday the 25th. bugs weren't bad, but maybe i expected worse. must depend a lot on timing. we did the feldtmann loop and had almost no problems at feldtmann, but a couple groups we passed while on the siskiwit trail and then met again at washington creek, said feldtmann was ...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice

question concerning the Feldtmann loop. is Island Mine a viable campground or should we skip it and go on Hugininin Cove. i've seen some posts and read other opinions that make it sound like the least or one of the least desireable campsites. tia

Re: weather and bugs

sorry to hear that about the bugs. we go over this saturday, 6/20. 3 weeks later than last year, no bugs to speak of. half our trip will be at lakeside camps (siskiwit and hugin), so i'm hoping the breeze will keep them down. thanks for the intel

Re: Suggestions for Carry

sorry i wasn't precise enough. i've used the alice clips to attach a case for a small binoc or camera case to the shoulder straps of the pack. usually try to carry the item somewhat protected from dirt and moisture. didn't mean you could attach the item directly. there are also small surplus pouches ...

Two weeks and counting. Any tips on grand portage and the ferry's other than showing up early and being ready. does canister fuel need to be out of our packs? tia

Re: Suggestions for Carry

sorry, military surplus. sort of like a carabiner, but not. used to hang various things off an alice pack. don't remember what alice stands for, but i think its an acronym. usually pretty cheap from an army surplus store.

Re: Suggestions for Carry

a friend hikes with a fanny pack swung around to the front. don't know if that would work or not. there are various holders that you may be able to attach to the shoulder straps and hip belt with alice clips. i've done that before. for the water, you might be able to do something with a hydration ...

Re: I.R in the fall!

My first trip to IR was last year. My daughter didn't have quite a warm enough bag so we decided to bug out a day early. As it ended up the day the Queen came over the visibility was near zero and high seas. The deceision was made to not risk the crossing so everyone spent the night. This year I am ...

Re: trekking poles

i've been using mine for several years. not sure how many ankles they've saved. most of the time i use a hammock so i use the poles to raise one side of my tarp. i used them last year on my first trip to IR. going up and particularly down the rocks, i found them indispensable.

freezing also apparently breaks the tubes. i looked at the MSR and thought about using it as a gravity, but wanted the charcoal to improve taste. going to stick with my miniworks for now.
