Annual Report

Any idea on when the annual report will be published. I saw last year it was published around March 4th.

Re: Rolf's presentation at Canoecopia

I believe Dr. Petersen has written before, that the tragedy of 3 wolves drown in a mine shaft changed his perspective on reintroduction. Before he was against it, then he realized that human intervention had already happened in the form of a mine shaft incident.

Re: Adding or Reintroducing Wolves to IR

I don't have nearly as much experience as the majority of the people on here do with Isle Royale, but the bug has bit me after my first trip last May. I think there is another side of the argument that hasn't been discussed. Being in the reforestation business and knowing what Moose, Deer, Elk, and ...

Re: Hammock camping on the Isle

During our Trip in Late May, We stopped at Lane Cove, Chickenbone West, Daisy Farm, and Rock Harbor. Plenty of Trees at Lane Cove, Chickenbone West, and Daisy Farm on the Camp Sites. We didn't use an underquilt, just rolled a small cut of silver sided bubble insulation. Only used it the first night....

Re: Solid ice from IR to Canada

Todays Modis images look like SOLID Ice for the 3rd day in a row. http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/webdata/cwops/html/modis/modis.php?region=s&page=1&template=sub&image=t1.14023.1704.LakeSuperior.143.250m.jpg Hopefully wolves are coming to the island. I wouldn't be surprised if there are...

Private Residences

Does anyone have a map of the private residences around the island? I've been to their website, which hasn't been updated since 2011. I've been trying to research more of the history of the people of the island. Have the families had their leases ended? That seemed to be the discussion around the ti...

Re: Goverment Shutdown

" We think we're going to get the reimbursements, but we don't know for sure," he said. Because Isle Royale National Park is closed, Reed said it's unlikely Tech's ongoing wolf/moose study will continue. Reed said Tech has about 800 active grants at anytime with a value of $9 to $10 millio...

Re: Goverment Shutdown

Philranger- That was my question. What's to stop the Queen IV and Voyager from dropping people off and collecting the $4/day as well as self registering their permits as if it's early May.

Is there actual more expense from a day closed down to a day open on an island.

Re: Obnoxious boaters

I have the same question as jimh. When I was on the island May 27-June 1st. I had my permit in my backpack, but never posted it on a shelter or had anyone check it either. Taking the ranger, I never got the true LNT talk everyone talks about. Ranger Paul spoke to us on the ranger about it, but then ...

Re: TR - 8/23 to 8/27/2013 Rock Harbor Area (First Timer)

On my stay on May 28th, We also found an illegal fire "ring" made from small rocks at Lane Cove. We found it odd because it appeared that the trail clearing crew had just been there with the fresh saw dust and the charred area looked rather fresh. I thought maybe the rangers are permitted ...

Re: TR: 5/27/13-6/1/13 [LC-CW-DF-RH]

Day 5 Daisy Farm to Rock Harbor I woke up to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. The weather was rather calm, but the waves were audible. I walked out at about 9 AM and started to feel the clothing I had hung up to dry, it was still damp, but much better than the previous night. I left my fish...

Re: Trip 5/27/13-6/1/13 LC-CW-DF-RH

Day 3 5/29/13 Lane Cove to West Chickenbone I, being an early riser got up at the crack of dawn, 7:00 AM, while my camp mates didn’t start moving about until about 9:00 AM. I started my day with a trip to the pit toilet followed by some filtering of water. I knew we had a long day of ahead of us an...
