Re: Trail maintenance?

We were at Merrit Lane last August 2014 and the parks service were jack hammering a new latrine one inch at a time. We pulled in around 3 p.m. and two parks service rangers drenched in sweat had been at it for a week and were looking for at least a 8 ft hole. They looked to be about 5 ft into solid ...

Re: It appears a decision has been made for the near term.

But it still doesn't help solve the inbreeding problem, right? The current packs can continue to have pups, but the long-term health of the incoming animals is still in jeporady, correct? That lone wolf that wandered across 25ish years ago gave the existing packs a new breath of life, but again that ...

Re: Rolf's presentation at Canoecopia

Not clear on your post. First you said his thoughts were to let them die out, then he was for reintroduction. Is he still for reintroduction based on the moose clear cutting/eating one of their main food sources, the Balsam Fir? Based on his moose "growing" comments. Are IR moose adapting a new ...

Re: Random question

Anything is possible with the right boat, weather window, skill and conditioning. Sure I've looked at it and thought it would be cool, but if you're on a time budget, there is a whole day out of your schedule. If you had unlimited time, it would be neat to mark it off the life list. We ...

Re: Big Pike! ?

We've had some success with pike in the little bay behind Birch Island at the mouth of McCargo Cove. Caught a few there and had several others following the hooked one to our boat. We were kayak fishing at the time. It's been a few years, but there was a big beaver dam back there. It goes back a ...

Re: Malone Bay vs. Todd Harbor

We visited both sites by kayak last summer on our IR circumnavigation. I really don't have a "hiking" dog in this conversation since I'm a kayaker, but it's winter, I'm wishing it was summer and just thought I'd weigh in to add my two cents. This was my second kayaking trip to IR. We had hoped to ...

Re: I am a Canoob, QUICK QUESTION!

From Rock Harbor, in good weather less than an hour and a half. Bad weather under three if you're dodging behind islands for protection and into a head wind.

Re: Hay Bay

I agree with Tampico. You should have room for those tents or spread out if there aren't any visitors. No trails connect to this site, but it is popular with boaters. I've kayaked IR twice Most recently 3 weeks ago, and this was probably my least favorite near water site. Last time we were ...
