Re: Concerned about missing Water Taxi after Seaplane arrival

Can you share where you made water taxi reservations? I cannot find anything online and my calls to the Lodge and email have gone unanswered. Thanks.

Re: Fishable Lakes Chart

Ive heard Siskiwit fish have high mercury and not exactly safe to eat. Since Wood and Siskiwit are connected, should that raise concern for us to eat the fish out of Wood? Thank you for your information. Contaminants discovered in the park ecosystem remind us that although Isle Royale is remote, it ...

Re: Fishable Lakes Chart

Several fisherman have reported Wood Lake to be productive, most often mentioning Northern. Wood is actually an arm of Siskiwit so I would expect the same species possible except probably hard to find a Lake Trout there. I would try the neck between Wood and Siskiwit for Northern. Ive heard ...

Re: Fishable Lakes Chart

Wood = Northern Pike. Lots of northern. In fact, we kept catching so many (and of good size) that I'd start to wonder if any bait fish survive beyond a minnow. As Midwest Ed notes, you can cast right from shore at the neck between Wood and Siskiwit (right by camp) and reel them in. I've also had ...

Re: Fishable Lakes Chart

Is there any info on Wood Lake as to what fish are in there and depths? Cannot find anything on it.

Re: Hiking Shoes?

I always use trail runners but thats just my preference. Make sure you try them on in person before purchasing. Functionality over fashion as well!

Re: First Timer perhaps 1st week of June 2019

If you can, try to hit Lane Cove. Its a dead end but its my favorite place on IR. Cove is wait deep for atleast 25-30 yards out. Perfect to take a dip after a long hike. It was plenty warm last year during May.

Re: Preliminary Itinerary for May 2019 with fishing and canoe questions

You're right, it's never too early to start planning an Isle Royale adventure. You're really going to enjoy that time of year on Isle Royale...no one will be there, no bugs, warm days, cool nights...it's really quite perfect. Also, smart to be cautious with a canoe on Siskiwit. From what johnhens ...

Re: Preliminary Itinerary for May 2019 with fishing and canoe questions

Unless things have changed, you book (or try to book---it can take some persistence) the water taxi through the lodge. Last year the lodge opened for "full operation" on June 5th. I don't know whether that was preceded by a condition of being semi-open and running the water taxi. You can talk to ...

Re: Preliminary Itinerary for May 2019 with fishing and canoe questions

Thanks for the advice, John! If you see two ding bats riding round in a canoe in those parts, thatll be us! 😂

Also, does anyone one know if water taxi runs that early in the season?

Re: Preliminary Itinerary for May 2019 with fishing and canoe questions

May 20th may be too early for the water taxi. Make sure you get confirmation from them before you make other commitments. Yikes! I didnt think about that. Great point! Im going to have to give them a call. I saw a post from 2012 saying someone rented a canoe for 5 days for 250 bucks. A little steep ...

Preliminary Itinerary for May 2019 with fishing and canoe questions

Its never too early to get into Isle Royale mode! Brother and I have decided to come back this year because we had such a blast in 2018. This year we are centering our trip around fishing! We caught some good sized northern and perch last year but also hoofed it quite a bit. We always start out from ...

A hot meal and a draft beer will be available tomorrow if going to Rock Harbor!

We sure wished they were open last week! :(

Re: Welcoming folks to Isle Royale's subreddit!

MattC, curious as to why you think the Reddit page is a better fit for these times. I just feel its a better platform to get the best information to the top for new and expierenced folks planning their trip. I understand this is the home base for all information but quality posts may get lost in ...
