Re: TR: 08/19-08/26, 2022 [Rock to Windigo via Minong Ridge]

It sounds like the island was hopping---but did you have Huginnin Cove to yourself? And are you at liberty to share the backwoods bourbon cocktail recipe?? Unfortunately there were at least two other groups at Huggnin. I would have taken site 2 if it was open. I didn't spend a lot of time looking ...

TR: 08/19-08/26, 2022 [Rock to Windigo via Minong Ridge]

Isle Royale Trip Report: August 19, 2022 – August 26, 2022 This trip was my third time on Isle Royale and my second solo trip. It was my first time on the Minong Ridge. I really wanted to see what the Minong had to offer. I’ve heard so much about how remote and difficult it is, so I gave myself as mu ...

Re: Minong Ridge Navigation with a Garmin

So, I'm back from my trip and working on a trip report. I figured that I'd report my way finding experience here. It seems that on the ridges, the trail follows the same path as it always has. I saw evidence of really old looking blazes painted in red-orange paint on the rocks marking the trail ...

Re: Mt. Franklin Fire - many east end trails, Lane Cove & Three Mile closed

I'd be working on a Plan B coming and going from Windigo: i.e. up the Minong and back on the Greenstone, or the Feldtmann Loop. If by some stroke of luck they decide to drop or ferry seaplane folks to Daisy, I'd expect they'll also make provisions for fuel--they obviously know it's a big issue ...

Any idea what this means for folks taking the seaplane? I’m headed to RH on Friday and planning to hike the Minong. It doesn’t look like there’s a route out of RH right now.

If by some stroke of luck they decide to drop folks at Daisy, I’ll still need fuel.

Thank you both. I’m sure it’ll be ok. I just wanted a little reassurance.

Minong Ridge Navigation with a Garmin

Hello all, I’ll be headed to the island for my third visit in late August. I'm attempting a solo trek from Rock Harbor to Windigo via the Minong Ridge Trail. I’ll have my Garmin InReach for emergencies and navigation. I'm wondering how accurate the maps on the InReach will be for the MRT. My last tri ...

I’m pretty certain it’s this model...

How do you like the Q-Core SLX? It is really comfortable. I like it a lot. I especially like the pump sack that you have to buy separately. It makes inflation a breeze. The large exhaust port makes deflation quick and easy as well. I can’t say how durable this one is. I haven’t had any problems wit ...

Re: TR:Feldtmann Loop & Huginin Cove, August 26-30, 2020

Do you know how much food you finished with? I think I ended up with three breakfasts, two dinners, and an unopened bag of turkey jerky. I decided on my second day to eat as much as possible to avoid carrying it. I don’t know about leaving food this year, but I have heard that on normal years, the r ...

I’ll try to get some photos posted later. I did get one of the canoe. Thanks for posting photos of the map. That is approximately what my GPS showed. 776FA429-98BF-4BC7-A763-2C30EF65C5EE.png It still astounds me that Garmin’s maps could be so out of date. I encountered something similar bikepacking g ...
