Re: Update as of 6/26
Just to second Tightlines01 - we spent 8 days on the island from June 21 - 28 and hiked Windigo to Rock Harbor along the Greenstone. Mosquitoes were worse on the Windigo end - the canopy covered swampy, humid forest areas (obviously). We used head nets occasionally, but with a nice layer of DEET ...

Re: Water treatment?
We're taking the Sawyer 4L gravity filtration system this year (http://sawyer.com/products/sawyer-complete-4-liter-dual-bag-water-purifier-system/)... it works great for larger groups. They also have a 2L version for smaller groups. It can filter 4 liters (or 4 Nalgene bottles approx) of water in 3 ...

Re: DeLorme InReach SE - Real Time Updates - June 21-28, 201
Thanks, Rafiki - my only concern with pushing through is that we won't be on the ground at Windigo until early afternoon - so we've already burned the morning hours to start the 11+ mile hike to South Desor. It's not impossible, but we had considered some off-trail from Island Mine to South Desor ...

Re: Craig Lake State Park anyone?
It's an old post... but in case anyone else comes across this and is curious... Craig Lake is a great option for some remote paddling! We did a trip in 2012 ourselves and loved it. I'd definitely recommend this as a nice alternative to IR, if you can't make the journey to the island. If you have any ...

DeLorme InReach SE - Real Time Updates - June 21-28, 2014
We're heading back to Isle Royale this week... taking the ferry from Copper Harbor on Sat, Jun 21 for a 7 day thru-hike from Windigo to Rock Harbor. While we're there, we'll be using the DeLorme InReach SE (http://www.inreachdelorme.com/product-info/inreachse.php) to provide updates and tracking to ...

Re: Late June 2014 - Off Trail Ideas for Experienced Backpac
Thanks, treeplanter! We're camping at Island Mine on our second night on the island... so, I'm considering going off-trail from there to Lake Desor (South) through ZONE 26 - along the Little Siskiwit River and then pop up to Lake Desor (or just camp in the backcountry for one night and hit the ...

Re: Trip ideas...
I'm heading back in a week for my second trip... a full thru-hike - Windigo to Rock Harbor... but our first trip included Lane Cove, which was awesome - great sunset - we could see the moon rising and the sun setting together (that was in mid-August). It's a steep hike coming back from Lane Cove ...

Re: Little Siskiwit River
Has anyone ever bushwacked up or down the Little Siskiwit? There appear to be waterfalls here 47.95372° N 88.94882° W and here 47.95167° N 88.94868° W. Also there appears to be a neat little island here 47.96047° N 88.95398° W. Looks like a very interesting Bushwack erhaps from Hay campground to ...

Late June 2014 - Off Trail Ideas for Experienced Backpackers
We have a trip planned for June 21 - 28 this year... and our small group of three experienced backpackers / navigators would like to do one evening of off trail, backcountry camping. We've been to the island, so we're familiar with both the regulations (zone map) and challenges of off trail camping ...
