Re: TR- 8/9-17, 2019 by kayak Tobin and Rock Harbor

A bit of good news - I finally got back to my camera, and now that it is fully dry I put the batteries back in and to my surprise it powered up ok. I need to try uploading some of the pictures and make sure they are good quality; they looked ok on the small screen display.

Re: Toilet Paper

Also some of the outhouses roofs leak and the nicely stocked supply gets wet. Always bring some of your own, and if needed stock up a bit when there is ample supply.

Re: Windigo to Greenstone Ridge

Take a look at the trail map and figure out the contour lines, then you will have an idea about the terrain. The campsites are mostly on lake shores (Island Mine is in a ravine next to a creek) and some of the biggest climbs are first thing in the morning as you climb the spur trail back up to the G...

Re: Windigo to Greenstone Ridge

I use trekking poles pretty much everywhere, so I would be taking them. Your choice, in my opinion.

Re: Windigo to Greenstone Ridge

It is for the most part a steady climb through forest. Dirt pathway, more than rocks and roots like the trails around Rock Harbor. As far as speed, that is highly dependent on your particular group, but five hours sounds reasonable if you move steadily. The turn-off into Island Mine is a pretty stee...

Re: TR- 8/9-17, 2019 by kayak Tobin and Rock Harbor

My kayak is a Feathercraft, made by a Canadian company that went out of business when the owner retired and thus parts, repair service etc are no longer available. This makes me very cautious and protective of my boat particularly the fabric hull. The boat, assembled with no accessories, weighs 35 p...

TR- 8/9-17, 2019 by kayak Tobin and Rock Harbor

Trip Report – Isle Royale 8/9-8/17 by kayak. Prelude: Left southern Ohio after work on Wednesday and drove up to Gaylord MI for a brief overnight stop at about the half-way point. Storms blew through overnight and rain, maybe small hail, was pelting against the window at some point. I awoke and resu...

Re: Windigo to Rock Harbor Itinerary

I have looked at this again and I have a couple more comments. You must be piecing together ferries and seaplanes, is that correct? Otherwise how are you arriving at Windigo at 10am and leaving Rock Harbor at 3pm? If you are taking the Voyager, you will be leaving Rock Harbor at 8am (Central time). ...

Re: Windigo to Rock Harbor Itinerary

Daisy Farm to RH lodge is more like 6 miles on the Rock Harbor trail. If you are going up the Greenstone to Mt Franklin (great overlooks) maybe it is closer to 9. Other than that, you describe a pretty standard end-to-end. What route are you thinking from Hatchet to McCargoe? Via Todd Harbor on the ...

Re: Labor Day Weekend- Trans to Beaver Island ?

Then another option is rent a canoe from the Voyager ferry folks. Call them immediately to determine if they have space available to bring it, and a canoe available. You will pay quite a bit for transport plus rental, but it may be your best option if you are determined to get to Beaver Is. for an o...

Re: Labor Day Weekend- Trans to Beaver Island ?

Rent a canoe or kayak from the concession at Windigo. I am not aware of water taxi on the Windigo end of the island.

Re: house boats

Method of transport? You would need to have a boat capable of being sailed or driven out to the island, across the open waters of Lake Superior. Last week there were several live-aboard sailboats including one from France. And there were some large cabin cruisers too. The kind of “houseboat” built o...

Re: Current bug report?

Just returned from kayaking around Tobin and Rock Harbor areas. Biting flies were a nuisance for about an hour around sunset. Put on long pants. Other than that, a few sluggish mosquitoes in woody areas. Never used my insect repellent or headset.

Re: Persied meteor showers peak 8/11-8/13

I am arriving on Friday and hoping for clear skies! The moon will be waxing gibbous and quite bright, good for night hikes but washes out meteor showers.

Re: Luxury item

Duffy, when you arrive in RH look me up in the campground-I will be leaving on the Ranger the next morning so I will definitely be “ in town”. I will put a note on the message board at the vis ctr.
