Re: Pack: Size and Weight Recommendations for 4-6 days on IR
1) Superlight: Everclear & Crystal Lite
2) My choice: Irish Whiskey, preferably Tullamore Dew.
3) For masochists: Beer or wine.
Thanks for the suggestions, Don. I like your choice best. Never tried the Tullamore--may have to give it a try! BTW, I've been that masochist who hauled wine on a ...

Re: [OFFICIAL] 2015 bug report
Thanks for the report, WindChill. I'm guessing the little buggers are going to be full-throttle when I get there next Sunday. Todd Harbor and McCargo are both on my itinerary, although the farthest west I will be is on the hike north out of Malone Bay. I really need to do a September trip some time ...

Re: Pack: Size and Weight Recommendations for 4-6 days on IR
Unless you have already found a new pack that fits you well and will fit all your gear, I'd stick with the Lowe Alpine for this trip. You're familiar with it, it most certainly will hold all you need (and then some! :)) Six pounds is certainly heavy for a pack, but I carried a 5+ pound Gregory ...

First of all, Happy 4th of July everyone. Hope your holiday is filled with fun, sun and friends. I'm guessing many of you are out on the trail this weekend! :) My trip is just ahead....

Re: Island Temperature
I agree, Tom. Great sleeping weather! However, I do prefer hiking in mid-to-upper 50's. It's not so chilly when I stop for lunch or a break and rain doesn't sting as much. 80's and 90's is just miserable hiking. Exhausting.

Island Temperature
I see it hit a balmy 39 degrees early this morning on Isle Royale. It's been hovering around 45 degrees much of the day. I showed this to my wife, who earlier questioned my decision to pack a down jacket during my trip in two weeks.

Re: Rock Harbor Backpacking Trail
Redbad provided you a very nice, doable route. The Minong will certainly take longer than your time allows. Save the Minong for the next trip--you'll be back.

Re: Concerning Time Zones and Voyageur II Schedule
Thank you all for your assistance. I'd forgotten they post the times on the camp bulletin boards. I'm always early to the dock and wouldn't think of missing this little boat ride to Malone!

Re: Dehydrated Chicken and Beef
Why not just take already cooked chicken in the pouch. The extra weight is minimal and it's very fresh and mixes great with rice or pasta. The whole dehydration process seems like too much work for the payoff. Just my 2 cents…

Re: McCargoe Cove
Awesome choice on the campground. I always make it a point to stay a night at that beautiful spot. In mid-July, I'll hike from Todd Harbor to McCargoe and then on to Moskey. I've always been lucky to snag a shelter at McCargoe, but fonixmunkee is right in that it can be fairly busy. Only once was ...

Concerning Time Zones and Voyageur II Schedule
I'll be taking the Voyageur II out of Daisy Farm to Malone Bay on the third day of my trip in mid-July. Schedule says pickup at 7:30AM. If my memory serves me correctly from my last trip in '09, the Voyageur operates on Central Time? So, an 8:30AM pickup according to my EST-set watch? I'd hate to ...
