Re: Bathing

I smell like a moose until the last day of my trip, save the occasional swim.

Re: Baggage Handling on the Ranger

I take a lunch, camera, book, hat and jacket into the cabin. it gets cold on the outside decks. I fill up on water in Houghton, just make sure your bite valve is locked or hanging off the side of the cart.

Re: Itinerary Thoughts

When are you scheduled to depart Houghton? That time of year there is plenty of light, I think the plane's last flight to the island is around 4:00 p.m. which would put you landing about 4:30. You should have plenty of time to make it to Island Mine as a backup or even a primary. I really like that ...

Re: Fishing pole needed?

In my experience, much like the lottery, my probability of catching fish whether using fishing gear or not is not statistically significant. It seems that on the island you have to know what you are doing. A twice a year fisherman like me has little luck. The charters on the island that guarantee ba...

Re: Itinerary Thoughts

Welcome to the forums. The Minong trail is the hardest trail on the island, with the west end having the most up and down. Beaver have been a problem in the last few years. They have put quite a bit of the trail underwater. Be prepared for some wet walking with extra shoes/boots and socks. Your itin...

Re: Itinerary Question - camping 4 nights

I agree with dcclark. Skip Lane and Chippewa, it's going to require too much perfection of legs and weather and airplane. They are nice, but more of a destination, than an overnight. Slow down and look around. I plan for 2 miles an hour on the island. At that speed I can look around as I walk, much ...

"That is, however, a very pleasant day trip in a kayak....."

That's how I came in, but we were walking with the Edison fishery folks for dinner Rolf and Candy.

Re: Moskey Basin to RH Lighthouse

I was on that trail early one year. We couldn't make it through the blow down from the winter. We had to go back and get tools to clear the path. It was only a few trees, but it's so thick there is no way around them.

Re: Rock Harbor vs. Windigo

I spent one night in the house keeping cabins at Rock Harbor a few years back. We had a view of Tobin harbor and I really liked it. It was the end of a cold wet trip and the cabin in the woods feel didn't take too much away from the back country feel. If it was a longer trip without camping I would ...

Re: Downtime activities at camp?

My hiking partner and I learned to play cribbage on the island. We (he) made an ultralight cribbage board out of a paint stir stick and a couple of tooth picks. you can play with a standard deck. just print the instructions before you leave.

FYI: after you book the taxi and give them the number in your group, any extra people get charged as if they are part of a separate trip... full price
