Re: East Feldtman Lake Trail

...wonder if they'll eventually decide not to repair all that boardwalk between Ishpeming and Siskiwit. That's gotta be a real treat to haul all of that lumber in from the dock on Malone. Speaking of, was surprised to see how good of shape that boardwalk was this year. Hiked it the first part of ...

Re: East Feldtman Lake Trail

This topo also shows an alternate route for the west trail, skipping the overlook and crossing Grace Creek above the open pond. Interesting that where the paths would diverge, coming up from Washington Harbor and then over close to Middle Point, seemed to have no obvious options when you're out ...

The temperature ranges you went through on this trip is a bit crazy. Nicely done!

Re: Lunar Eclipse on 9/27/15

To figure out solar/lunar alignments I've always used this: http://app.photoephemeris.com/?ll=47.904649,-89.004035&center=47.9103,-88.9520&z=12&spn=0.08,0.29&dt=20150927193715-0400 I don't think any of the sites would have a good angle. I'd recommend walking out to the second beach past Senter to ...

Re: TR: 8/29 - 9/6, 2015 Solo Perimeter Extravaganza

Thanks. There were a few long days but always had more than enough time to relax, eat, and set up camp before watching the sunset. Never really slept in too much :) The Feldtmann between the tower and Siskiwit was turrible. The ranger warned me that there were three thick sections: between Grace ...

Re: Trekking Poles: Carbon vs Aluminum?

Little scratches if any, and that included the ferry ride and plane ride out. There was one point where one completely gave out because I didn't tighten the joint enough that really spooked me. No damage though, just me being lazy :)

Re: [OFFICIAL] 2015 bug report

Biting flies at Rainbow Cove during the first week of September that were a bit annoying. Otherwise a handful of mosquito bites, nothing worth worrying over. Surprised to see them so late in the year.

Re: Trekking Poles: Carbon vs Aluminum?

I just used a pair of Komperdell Expeditions (carbon) for 9 days out there and loved them. Fell pretty good a few times and abused them more than once with no issue. They're z-pole. Never used aluminum so can't give too much thought on those, but very happy with these.

TR: 8/29 - 9/6, 2015 Solo Perimeter Extravaganza

This was my first time on the island and my first time backpacking so I basically wanted to see everything . 8/29, Day 1 - Rock Harbor to Lane Cove Got a ride on the Queen to Rock Harbor. After taking care of all the little errands there swung over to Tobin Harbor Trail and climbed up Franklin and ...

Re: Freeze Dried portion sizes

If possible, you should do a few test runs. I've also read that 2x is recommended, but after a few 3-day weekend trips learned that 2000 calories of good noms is just right. Some people feel better with more, some with less. Last thing you want to do is have a grumbling stomachs over a long trip.

Re: Dehydrated Chicken and Beef

Recently used canned chicken, dehydrated it for 10 hrs over the warmest setting, and it came out okay. Stringy, but I was pretty hungry, so it was all good.

Is GPS recommended on Minong

Howdy, First time poster, first visit to IR in a few months. I've been going over a gear list and am trying to shave weight for a 9-day trip on the Minong/Feldtmann and was wondering if previous visitors would recommend bringing a GPS along. I'd love to leave it at home and not worry about batteries ...
