Re: What national parks haven't you visited, but would like to?

Outside the US I'd love to get to the Wakahn NP. It's bigger than Yellowstone and gets maybe 200 visitors per year. Maybe because it's almost impossible to get there.

Re: Knife perferences

For general backpacking I use a Victorinox Ambassador Swiss Army Knife. It is a minimal knife with a small blade and scissors (which I use more than the blade). It is exactly like the more familiar Classic, but slightly larger. I find the blade and scissors are more functional when a bit bigger but ...

Re: 2016 Trip Log - Add your planned itinerary here!

Sorry, but this summer's trip ended up being in Shenandoah NP (40 miles on the AT north into Big Meadows). Maybe IR next year.

Re: Isle Royale Talk (Ranger's Perspective)

I was at that park again last weekend for a hike and got to chat with that ranger Kelly again at length one-on-one.

Re: Isle Royale National Park narrows wolf study

Nice article... Though Isle Royale is officially part of Michigan and the author claimed it for Minnesota. :-) Because IR is in MI, it makes for a good trivia question. Name three pairs of states that are adjacent to each other in an alphabetically list of states and also border each other. FL/GA, ...

Re: What national parks haven't you visited, but would like to?

Has anyone hiked the Superior Hiking Trail in MN? I've seen that on a few "best trail" lists. If the Porkies are similar to IR, can the same be said for the LST?

Re: What national parks haven't you visited, but would like to?

Great info. I've known about all these places (except the Trap Hills) since I met my wife 34 years ago. She had worked in the UP and introduced me to a lot of great places in the UP. But if want the ultimate UP adventure, it would be in the Huron Mountains where you will find tens of thousands of ac...

Re: Pictured Rocks!

It is a linear hike, but the bus service between munising and grand marais makes the logistics easy. http://www.altranbus.com/backpack.html It is relatively flat. The previous year I did 50 miles on the AT in VA with a few thousand feet of elevation gain/loss per day and that beat me up pretty bad s...

Re: Pack weight

I have an elemental Horizons Kalais. It weighs 31 oz. My base weight for three season hiking is about 14 lbs. I like the way this pack carries. It's similar to the better known ULA Catalyst.

Isle Royale Talk (Ranger's Perspective)

Our local county park system (Ottawa County MI) has a nature center where they have regular presentations from their staff naturalists. On Sunday, they had a presentation (to a packed auditorium) about IR given by one of their seasonal naturalists. She has been working for the Country Parks in the w...

More Pics falls.jpg Spray Falls is one of the first cliff views.
