Re: 1941 IR Guide

That is a treasure trove! If I have a couple of the brochures that are "cover only" over the years, would it be useful to send them to someone for inclusion in this archive? If you are talking about the npshistory.com site, I contacted them to see if they were interested in some of my doc...

Re: Backpacking Lower Peninsula

Manistee River Loop is more like 20 miles and pretty easy. I did most of it in one day. For a longer trip, I would suggest the North Country Trail in the Maniatee NF. From North if Newaygo to the Manistee River Loop is mostly off road and in the NF

Re: Backpacking knife

I have the SAK Victorinox Ambassador. It is the same as the SAK Classic, but slightly larger which makes the scissors more functional for people like me with fat fingers. The blade is small, but still larger than the Classic. https://www.victorinox.com/global/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/Small-Pock...

Re: Stove Fuel - Windigo - June 4th

Not sure what the OP was asking when he said isopropyl fuel. Isopropyl alcohol is a poor fuel for alcohol stoves. If he was asking about alcohol, I can answer as I recently asked the plane operators about alcohol fuel as that what I use. Alcohol is not allowed on planes, nor are alcoholic beverages ...

Re: sock debate

I wear only Darn Tough. I did have a pair of Fits, but they did not wear well. The complex joints that allowed them to fit all wore thin very quickly. I feel DT socks need to be broken in. With time they confirm to the shape of your foot. I think it helps not to wash them too often. Their anti stink...

Nordhouse Dunes is the only Wilderness area in the LP. The Lake Michigan Rec Area on the north side is a great NF Campground and good access point.

Re: Isle Royale Queen III

I was reading the IR park brochure from 1941 (one year after the park was founded) and it listed the Isle Royale Queen out of Copper Harbor as one of the boats that serviced the island. This makes the Queen the longest serving boat service to IR. You can read it here. http://npshistory.com/brochures...

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste

Agree that washing is not really necessary and the most eco friendly. However good hygiene calls for hand washing after defication. I bring a sliver of Ivory soap for such purposes. As already stated, this should be used away from water. I use Ivory as it is just plain soap. As such it is an all nat...

Re: First Time Visitor, Looking for Itinerary Advice

On our first trip to IR (1984?) we did almost exactly what you have planned. Worked great. We canoed Tobin Harbor and did the hike up to Lookout Louise We took an excursion to Raspberry Island (I think this was a Ranger-guided hike). We hiked to Scoville Point. We took the boat to Daisy Farm and Hik...

Re: Water filter

I use the HydroBlue Versaflow filter. It is basically the same as a Sawyer, but with the advantage that it has threads on both sides. So you can set it up for gravity filtration with no adaptors and you can back flush just by squeezing water backwards through the filter from your threaded clean wate...

Re: What national parks haven't you visited, but would like to?

Outside the US I'd love to get to the Wakahn NP. It's bigger than Yellowstone and gets maybe 200 visitors per year. Maybe because it's almost impossible to get there.

Re: Knife perferences

For general backpacking I use a Victorinox Ambassador Swiss Army Knife. It is a minimal knife with a small blade and scissors (which I use more than the blade). It is exactly like the more familiar Classic, but slightly larger. I find the blade and scissors are more functional when a bit bigger but ...

Sorry, but this summer's trip ended up being in Shenandoah NP (40 miles on the AT north into Big Meadows). Maybe IR next year.

I was at that park again last weekend for a hike and got to chat with that ranger Kelly again at length one-on-one.
