Re: Decent instant coffee

Having been raised on percolated Folgers (which I started drinking when I was, like, 4), Via works for me. But I've meet backpackers who rave about Kuju coffee, which comes packaged in its own, adaptable-to-most-mugs, pourover system. It's pricey and weighty, but supposedly satisfying to the discern...

thanks so much for this report! I laughed out loud when you described stalking the Lane Cove moose (I pictured you in full-on Jim Bridger mode, buckskin fringe and all) --- and thinking of ice cream.

I also marvel at the mountain house tub victualling strategy. Would you do it again?

Re: 2021 Trip Advice: Minong Ridge, to Daisy Farm

For what it's worth, the most difficult stretch of IR trail, by far, in my experience: the Tobin Harbor trail, when choked with deadfall. Huh. I would not have guessed that one for you, as you have wingèd feet. The wings on my feet were part of the problem: even they got entangled in the deadfall!

Re: 2021 Trip Advice: Minong Ridge, to Daisy Farm

This exchange about the trail connecting Moskey Basin to Daisy Farm underscores the fact that different walkers (or the same walker under different external/internal conditions) experience the same stretch of trail in different ways. Some one needs to develop a trail difficulty calibration app that ...

Thanks for this terrific report on a wonderful trip! You accomplished the rare double of bulldozers AND voyageur canoes! I didn't think it was possible to feel even more regret about not getting to the island this year, but now I do. I think it's because details of your report pushed some of my nost...

Re: Venture crew group trip

-Torpified, do you recommend these group sites or was it just averaging days? Are there any groups sites that are just not worth staying at? I was looking at changing the 9.7m day, so we would have more time at the mine and fire watch. just linking camps into an itinerary consistent with your typic...

Re: Venture crew group trip

totally off-topic rant: I quit the girl scouts the very week that, while they were building rockets in my brother's cub scout troop, my troop was being instructed by somebody named Wendy Ward in the proper technique for filing our nails. We were even issued emery boards in vinyl carrying cases sport...

Re: Venture crew group trip

Hi, Kees, and three cheers for co-ed Scout groups! The Greenstone (the park newspaper; a .pdf is posted somewhere on this forum) will tell you which campgrounds have group sites. It looks like Rock Harbor, 3 Mile, Daisy Farm, both Chickenbones, McCargo, Moskey, and Lake Richie all do. That makes put...

Thanks for the report! I'm hoping to visit the Feldtmann loop on my next trip, so I especially appreciate your account. Did you keep a running tab on the cribbage outcomes? And did you carry a full-sized board or a UL backpacking miniaturization that doubled as tent-stake? (If anybody from the NPS i...

Re: 2021 Trip Advice: Minong Ridge, to Daisy Farm

2021 sounds like it's going to be a banner year for you! I thought the Minong (which I did in my mid-50s) was a blast. The very things that make it more difficult than IR's other trails --- frequent ascents/descents via rocky treadway to ridges presenting minor micronavigational challenges --- also ...

What a wonderful trip and report! Sunprints! Gnocchi!! You are a genius. (I hope there will be pictures of each.) About the bonus days at the end due to grounded (<--seems like a category mistake---maybe harbored?) seaplanes. It sounds like you were already dipping into your emergency rations during...

Re: TR:Aug 26 - Sept1, 2019, Rock Harbor - Windigo, via Greenstone

thanks for the report! And congratulations on accomplishing your extremely well-conceived goal: "to just complete this end to end walk, without getting hurt, and to see some moose." Without falling, to boot! (I've never not fallen.) weight paring: there's quite a bit you can do without forking out $...
