Re: Current water availability: Greenstone Ridge trail?
FKTs come and go, but making it to the grill in time for a burger is forever!

Re: Current water availability: Greenstone Ridge trail?
I know you’re running now, but I’m curious whether 3) came through for you. (It’s the one I would have expected to.) It’s a very brief detour from there, one I invariably take by accident, to Chickenbone Lake.
How did the run go??

Also, it’s wouldn’t be weird if the wolves found them somewhat off-putting!

Re: Voyageurs backcountry lake
That sounds amazing! Do you reckon it was the SAME beaver who swam by once a day, or do you think they were working in shifts? (The night I spent at Feldtmann Lake, I had a similar question about the moose.)

Re: Wolf troubles.
Does anyone know whether previous generations of IR wolves raided the garbage? I also wonder whether bear canisters are going to join the list of approved storage methods. (There’s apparently a bear in the NE part of Yosemite who’s figured out how to get into a bear canister. But since her method ent ...

Re: 5 day trip, looking for recommendations
If you do make it S Desor the first night, consider W Chickenbone for the second, then 3 mile (via the Greenstone Ridge) for the third. Two advantages: -the stretch of the GRT between the Daisy Farm and Mt Franklin junctions is outstanding—-you’re really up on an open ridge (that said, the shore wal ...

Awesome! (Except the apocalyptic black fly hatch, of course.). What kind of packraft were you using, and how did it handle in the Superior waters??

Re: Impossible logistics
How flexible are your dates and your budget? There's a lodge in Rock Harbor you could stay in for one of the nights---pending availability. Only it shutters itself for the season on September 10. If you moved your dates up to Sept 7-9, that might be an option, though. Sticking with the same dates ...

Re: favorite trail and campsite
impossible questions, but: trail: from hidden lake dock up to lookout louise (a choice that sneaks in the canoeing necessary to reach the trailhead) campground: Feldtmann Lake! It's true, my site was basically an outdoor anteroom to the campground outhouse---but the nonstop moose traffic, and option ...

Re: First timer looking for feedback
More or less that itinerary, at more or less that time of year, was my first trip---I also felt the pull of walking across the island, and the Greenstone Ridge looms large in wide-angle accounts of options. I loved it. I also agree that stretches of its western half *are* a tunnel of trees. You'll ...

Re: Historical data on Hatchet Lake and Chickenbone Lake algal blooms
I think, if there was an algal bloom at Hatchet, I'd reroute to stay at Superior sites: carry on to Todd that night, then McCargo (or Moskey) the next, before arriving at Daisy as scheduled. I guess that's changing up the whole itinerary though---not optimal for a thorough hike! Another idea (not ...

Re: Itinerary feedback!
I agree that getting to Rock Harbor in time for a cheeseburger before meeting the plane could mean skedaddling on Day 6. A way to finesse that while sticking with the Minong plan would be to press on past Todd Harbor to McCargo on day 4, then target Daisy Farm or 3 Mile on Day 5. 3 Mile would give ...

Re: Can't plan too early, questions for starting at Windigo
Some quick thoughts about the trail runners question: calibration: according to fastestknowntime.com, the current FKT on the Greenstone ridge trail is around 7 hours. The official route follows the GRT to its eastern terminus, and ends at the Hidden Lake Dock. So it's a mile or so longer than your ...
