Re: TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

What does 2021 bring on this post tower stretch in terms of overgrowth? Here's a picture from fairly early in the stretch. I don't remember whether it got brushier, or by how much --- but I think that if it had risen to the level of a nuisance, that would at least have disrupted the monotony that i...

Re: TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

It was especially fun to read about your first experience of the Feldtmann Loop. I'm now a Feldtmann advocate! I think it'd be a great introduction to the island. It's a got a little of many things: ridge walking, fire towers, boardwalks and swamps, bushwhacking, beaver meadows in various phases, m...

Re: TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

6/5 Hatchet Lake to Daisy Farm Everything that mattered came through the night dry. But my rainfly was soaked and liable to stay that way for a while: thunder growled and rain kept falling. The last to leave camp even though it wasn’t yet 8, I headed up and out. The rain abated around where the GRT ...

Re: TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

6/4 Siskiwit Bay to Hatchet Lake I stopped yesterday at Siskiwit, even though it was only lunchtime, in order to spread the new-to-me parts of this walk over more days. I think this was a good move. The new-to-me parts today were great fun; the repeats a bit of trudge --- but the day ended with many...

6/3: Feldtmann Lake to Siskiwit Bay The moose were still out the next morning. feldtmann morning moose.jpeg Before heading to Siskiwit, I walked the easy spur trail to Rainbow Cove, where I collected clear Superior water and admired the sun hitting the Rock of Ages light house. rainbow cove.jpeg The...

Re: TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

6/2: Island Mine to Feldtmann Lake I spent part of the pleasant walk from Island Mine to Windigo worrying how the annual layers of moose tooth were arranged: in a stack, like pancakes, or concentrically, like tree rings? I had other moose worries too: I still hadn’t seen any, nor had I seen as many ...

Re: TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

6/1 Chippewa Harbor to Malone Bay to Island Mine Reporting to the dock the next morning to await the Voyageur, I finally met my motorboating neighbors. They’d been joined by another motorboater, whose presence I detected when a heartfelt testimonial concerning “the most beeeyootiful fish I’ve ever s...

TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

[this is going to come in pieces, governed by the 3 attachments per message limit. Apologies in advance for the high ratio of words to miles.] Background: The Feldtmann loop and the Ishpeming trail (a 7 mile spur off the Greenstone that deadends at Malone Bay) are the two major stretches of IR trail...

Re: TR 5/19-5/23, 2021 [Hiking]: Windigo-S. Desor-W. Chickenbone-Threemile-Rock Harbor

thanks for the wonderful report! Using the voyageur to send yourself a care package is a brilliant maneuver. I'm curious: with all the rain, was it difficult to collect readily combustible fuel for the twig stove?

thanks for the awesome report! I wish I could have seen the eagle thievery incident. I was on the island, on foot and on some of the same trails, at the same time*, and I admire your restraint in labeling the weather of Friday/Saturday June 4/5 "a decent thunderstorm". Huddled in my tent a...

Rock Harbor Lodge Miscellany

Yesterday, I spoke to a human employee of Forever Resorts about Rock Harbor Lodge operations this season. In case they're of interest to others, some findings: -they're no longer offering half-day canoe rentals with rooms. However, the canoe/kayak concession will operate, so it's still an option to ...

Re: Itinerary Thoughts

Itinerary looks great! You'll face some choices (which trails to follow, and maybe camps to stay at) later in the trip, but by then you'll have collected good background information to inform those decisions. A few disconnected thoughts: You should probably have a contingency plan in case your deliv...

I am assuming bugs can be a factor any time of the year and I should plan for the worst.
that's how I play it. A headnet weighs next to nothing. The disutility of bringing it and not using it is teeny; the disutility of leaving it home then needing it is huge.

that's the one place it can't be, because I've never been! (Hoping to redress that in a few weeks, though.) I *think* it's the Indian Portage Trail, between Lake Ritchie and the Ridge.

Re: Venture crew group trip

question 2, is there lockers or any kind of storage or lockers you can rent at RH? no lockers, but the RH and Windigo Stores will store packages (provided they don't contain food or fuel) for a fee. The park website says to call the RH lodge for details (eg fees/operating dates and hours) and lists...
