Re: The Isle Royale Curse
I'm picking out the date now. I have to decide on either May 17 or May 20 as the start. I really want the 17th but it's cutting it close. I give my last final exam on the 12th and need to get grades in so I can leave on the 15th to drive up. I plan for this to be my last semester teaching and for ...

Re: Gaia GPS for smartphones
I also carry an InReach in addition to using Gaia on my phone for the last 3 years. I have the InReach SE version. I use the Earthmate App on my phone (iPhone 6S Plus) and bluetooth to connect. I have found battery life to be what Ed describes above. One new feature added to InReach in the last ca ...

Re: Power Bank for Phones, GPS, Camera, etc
Entirely by accident I found the paper which had some of my data on it. I thought I had thrown it away. I charged my iPhone 6S Plus (2750 mAh battery) using the below chargers and used a Nitecore Digicharger D4 to recharge the 18650 batteries. The battery showed 4.2 V after charging. Each time I put ...

Re: Power Bank for Phones, GPS, Camera, etc
Thanks Ed. Here's where my knowledge of electricity falls apart and maybe this info you can clarify. I don't know if a direct comparison can be made. Also I don't have equipment to test this. I'm relying on the battery reading of the cell phone to indicate how much was transferred and this is an ...

Power Bank for Phones, GPS, Camera, etc
I thought of this thread when I began discussing using GaiaGPS on a smartphone and the need for recharging. I also know that many people don't know some of the information contained here.
I carry a headlamp/flashlight, an InReach SE satellite GPS/Text Messenger, an iPhone 6S Plus, and sometimes ...

Re: Gaia GPS for smartphones
I have used Gaia on an iPhone 6S Plus. I've never carried a GPS other than I also carry an InReach SE which is a GPS/Satellite Text Messenger. I can give you a bit of info.
Gaia will work when your phone is in airplane mode to shut off all the other stuff that could drain power.
As to power usage, I ...

The Isle Royale Curse
Well, it’s winter and time to plan the next trip to IR. While I’ve been lurking on the forum for a few years now, I haven’t posted before but now I need your help. It has become clear to me that Isle Royale is cursed and I haven’t seen any discussion about this fact. The previous 3 years I’ve gone ...
