Re: Better to visit Isle Royale ASAP or later in September?

Only down side to Sept is the weather tends to turn with more blows and higher likelihood of boats being delayed. Went the 3rd week last year--the boat that brought us out in 8' seas was a day late going back, and we were a day late getting back at the end. Were you on the Queen during that passage...

Re: Water shoes for lakes?

I was in E. Chickenbone a few weeks back and it was fine... standard silty/sandy type bottom. It will stir up, but not what I would call "mucky", although as mentioned there were some larger rocks to be aware of. That particular lake has a pretty small access spot though, and it is the onl...

Re: Hammock friendly campsites

Watch out for hammocks on birch trees - birch trees, especially when old, are very brittle and a hammock has been enough to cause them to snap off - I think I recall a person was badly injured by a falling tree at one of the backcountry campgrounds within the last couple years. Hatchet Lake is pret...

Re: Solo Kayaking inland lakes.

I would also be very cautious about taking any smaller vessel on some of those lakes later in the season. They can be surprisingly cool/cold and squalls can come out of nowhere, especially on Siskiwit. I would not take our sea kayaks on that lake in September without sprayskirts, wetsuits and a ver...

Amazing Scouts Trip July 2-7, 2017 [Canoe, Hike]

We took a small group of older Boy Scouts on a trip that included two days of canoeing and 4 days of backpacking. The trip was absolutely amazing, one that these boys will remember for a lifetime I'm sure. There were a total of 4 boys and 4 adults, so we were required to stay at group sites througho...

How's the weather?

So it looks like the recent weather pattern on IR is about 15-20 degrees below average for daytime highs, but there is some discrepancy depending on what site you use to check it. How have the real feel temps been out on the island? Has anyone been out recently and packed for June, only to feel like...

Re: planning a trip and have questions about difficulty

re: ferry- one leaving 15 mins later and one leaving 15 minutes earlier is going to cause either of the operating companies issues? Actually, I think it's all because there is only one official dock for ferries in Rock Harbor, and they have to share it. Therefore, they both can't be docked at the s...

Re: Minong Water Sources

Yeah water needs to be flowing for the sawyer bags to fill up easily, but using a scoop works just fine as well. I find that it you inflate the bag a little bit (i.e. blow it into shape), and then grab the bag at the fill neck and "scoop" with the bag itself you can fill it quite easily i...

Re: cell phone coverage?

Which is all well and good until something goes terribly wrong. I feel that leaving a means of emergency communications behind is about a sensible as leaving your first aid kit and rain-gear behind in the hopes that you won't need them. I agree with you, if the phone is an easy option for emergency...

Re: cell phone coverage?

Don't tell anyone the secret, but do you want to know one of the best things about Isle Royale? ... no cell phone service! :) just kidding... but I love to just enjoy to wildness of these places and plug back in after I get home.

Re: Trekking Poles

I like them... I use 2 when hiking with full gear. I really think they help with general stability and stress on the knees when going up, and especially down hills with a pack on. I know they are a bit trendy right now, but I use them anyway, lol. I recently upgraded from some aluminum Black Diamond...

Discover Magazine - Rolf Peterson

I saw that Rolf Peterson was listed in the May 2017 edition of Discover Magazine in an article titled "Hero's of Science". It is so great to see his work get that kind of recognition, especially after 40+ years of research on the island. Rolf was a professor and mentor of mine in college a...

Re: Season Pass

The park statement reads: "The Isle Royale Season Pass will cost $60 and include up to three adults traveling with the pass holder...". Just to be sure that I'm clear on it, this means the Pass Holder and then up to 3 additional adults for a total of 4 people, correct? Just as an FYI, we ...

Re: Season Pass

great, that's how I read it as well, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. We are still waiting to hear about our group site requests for a boy scout trip this summer, but that would save us some money on daily fees.
