Re: Trip Report July 12-18, 2017

Thanks to all for taking the time to read and comment on the report. I'm just now hopping back into the forum as I've been asked for an interview by a Minnesota podcast to talk about my trip. I still feel like an IR novice, but learned a lot about my own insecurities that I pack for on a trip like t...

Trip Report July 12-18, 2017

TR July 13-18, 2017 Greenstone Ridge trail; Rock Harbor to Windigo Hammocking reports It's a new year and I've had six months since my first trip to the island. I think it's true that time heals and lends perspective. Had I posted my report right after my trip my perspective would have been differen...

Re: Hammock friendly campsites

Just returned from my trip to the island an can provide a bit more detail on hammock hangable sites along the Greenstone. Unfortunately due to weather my first two campsites were spent in shelters (Rock Harbor and Daisy Farm). Both appeared to have hangable sites if you can get them. They are busy c...

Payment Method's Accepted on IR

Newbie question for sure, but I don't want to be stuck needing something from the store, having to pay a fee, catching an unexpected water taxi, etc. in either Rock Harbor or Windigo. It looks like cash is king. Does anyone know if that's still the case or could a person bring along a credit card as...

Re: TR: 6/24/17 - 6/29/17 [Rock Harbor - Windigo]

Thanks for the report. I am heading up next week and will be doing a longer version of your exact itinerary. Good to know about the Tobin Harbor vs Rock Island Trails. I am coming from Grand Portage and won't be to RH until late afternoon. My goal is go get to Daisy Farm before dinner. We'll see how...

Re: Hammock friendly campsites

I'll report back after my June trip. I hope to hang as much as possible but will be prepared to go to ground if I have to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Curious what your thoughts are on hammock vs. tent now that you've made the trip. I'm heading up in July and that's really the last decision ...

Re: Voyageur and Sea Hunter Comparison?

Thanks @ingo for the reply. That's my plan so unless the weather forces me to do otherwise it's a long ride there and a short one back.

Re: Voyageur and Sea Hunter Comparison?

So it looks like the Sea Hunter is only to Windigo and back correct? If one is heading to Rock Harbor it's either departure from Houghton or taking the Voyager the extra hours. Do I have that right?

Re: Itinerary Advice for July 2017

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I spoke today with a gentleman who's been on the south end twice and as far as Island Mine (on a day trip) heading out from Windigo. He pretty much said the same on bugs, which, having done Gooseberry to Tettegouche on the SHT a couple years ago in June I'm all to f...

Itinerary Advice for July 2017

I'm planning my first trip to IR and it may be a solo one (still trying to convince a backpacking friend to come along). I've done quite a bit of backpacking and hiking with my son and his Boy Scout Troop, including Philmont. I feel confident in covering about 8-9 miles a day, though I've done up to...
