Re: Portage from Lake Whittlesey to Wood Lake

First of all, I do not want to sound like a “know it all “. There are radio bands that: •. Broadcast in English •. Broadcast in French, different band •. Broadcast first in one language, switching next to the other. FRENCH/ENGLISH, & etc. I was holed up on Wood Lake for days in a wind storm; my Garmi ...

Re: Portage from Lake Whittlesey to Wood Lake

I admire your courage taking on this trip with MS. I have made this trip 2X & the energy requirement for dealing with a canoe-yourself-gear-pack can be challenging. Seriously, I would look for a partner. Further, recommend you carry a marine radio, whistles, & flares. You would be found eventually ...

Re: Hiking Shoes?

Recommendation: Whatever footgear you choose, the core concept to remember is this. Hold the shoe up with your left hand under the toe, right hand under the heel. Try to twist the sole of the shoe. If the sole twists, discard that option. You want a shoe, what sole does not twist when the above ...

Re: Paddling the Inner Lakes

Lake Ritchie #1, Wood Lake very close, not really even #2

Wood Lake gives access to Siskiwit which is both beautiful & terrifyingly sublime.

Re: Trying to plan a first time canoe/portage trip

Which, Ritchie--east or west, is "the canoe campground" ? New topic: in your opinion, do I need a canoe flotation device ? I am not going to be in L Superior much, & I would think the inland lake swell would generally be less high & hazardous. Next, what are my best safety signaling protections ? My ...

Re: Trying to plan a first time canoe/portage trip

First of all my appreciation for the experiences shared & advice. Very helpful Anyway, my trip, the last week of July, is approaching & I have a few questions for those who have related experience & insight. From McCargoe Coce to Lake Ritchie, there are two trails. Is one better/easier/preferred ...

Re: Trying to plan a first time canoe/portage trip

IR CANOE TRIP PLANNED END OF JULY Ingo: Earlier you provided really good advice. I am planning a 2 person canoe trip using your suggested route from McCargoe Cove portaging through the inland lakes to Chippewa Harbor for a taxi pick up.

At least that is the current plan.
<br ...

Re: Trying to plan a first time canoe/portage trip

For Ingo: Why do you state trip for inland lakes not recommended beginning/returning Rock Harbor. What I meant is I will be leaving from Copper H & not on Voyageur II I might be able to get a taxi to McCargo, but still need insight how relaxed the Inland Lakes would be. Don't mind working hard, but ...

Re: Trying to plan a first time canoe/portage trip

Thanks for the replies. The trip starts EX Copper Harbor.

I am taking the provided info & overlaying it on my IR map. I will have more questions after I wrap my ahead around what both are telling me & as I "visualize" the route.

Trying to plan a first time canoe/portage trip

I have Isle Royale in my blood & realized, while there last Summer, I was missing a lot. I am trying to put together a trip on using a 2 person, lite weight Weenonah canoe paddling maybe Tobin Harbor & then portaging between lakes. Has anyone done this & can suggest a 4-5 day itinerary ? I really ...
