Re: Horne Fire

Funny, almost, that the only contained part of the fire is Lake Superior. And notice the fire break along the Tobin Harbor/Duncan Bay portage. It seems that's as far west as the Park Service will allow the fire to burn. Interesting that there are no fire breaks on the east side of the fire. Yes, I ...

Re: Horne Fire

NPS updated the site, depending on where you look, fire is 25-35% contained on 362 acres. A good new map too. MODIS from yesterday is also looking good.

Re: Horne Fire

I hope that Lane Cove will be open in three weeks, but I'm going to try not to get my hopes up.

Re: Itinerary advice

Welcome! Would highly recommend Lane Cove over Daisy based on your goals. No shelters at Lane, but smaller/quieter and a little more scenic IMO so I think that would help meet your goals you listed. You'll get a chance for shelters at McCargoe, a great spot. You can also check out the Minong Mine wh...

Re: TR (5/31-6/7, 2021): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

Thank you for the great TR and photos! Excited to head back in a few months and tackle the Minong (provided it opens up on schedule). Such an interesting route - my first reaction was how convoluted it seemed, but upon reading about your goal of reaching previously-untrekked trail, made perfect sens...

Re: Itinerary Thoughts

Welcome! I agree with Base about McCargoe. Great spot, and a number of shelters there as well, subject to availability. Torpified's scouts/informants are correct about Hatchet Lake leeches, in my experience (Though I've only seen one in two visits. Many more at Feldtmann Lake). I also agree about s...

Re: 1st time solo traveler.

Thank you sooooooo much for this valuable info. As for water, I planned to refill at the campgrounds. Is it accurate that all campgrounds offer water? Jumping in here - I took my first trip to ISRO as a solo a few years ago and loved it! Excited for you. In my experience all campgrounds offer water...

Re: TR: 9/18-9/25, 2020 [MB, HL, SD, SB, FLx3]

Hobbes - Great report. Always appreciate a "Gear Notes" section that describes what worked or didn't work. Interesting route; did your original itinerary include spending the last 3 nights at Feldtmann Lake? The original itinerary planned for a bypass of Siskiwit (due to construction), 3x...

dcclark - glad you enjoyed! And agreed - setting things up ahead of time is the key with the filter. torpified - Ikr! I remember reading about cribbage in another TR and was inspired to bring the board. We did not keep a record but it seemed to go pretty back and forth. I think we each got skunked o...

TR: 9/18-9/25, 2020 [MB, HL, SD, SB, FLx3]

Trip Report: Moskey Basin, Hatchet Lake, Lake Desor South, Siskiwit Bay, Feldtmann Lake (September 18-25, 2020) Summary: Third trip to the Isle did not disappoint. First time via the seaplane. Beautiful weather (light rain for half a day), good wildlife sightings, and Feldtmann to ourselves for 3 n...

Re: TR: 7/29-8/11, 2020 [Hiking] [An east-end itinerary: RH > TM > DF > MB > TM > LC > RH]

Thank you for this TR! Sounds like a great trip. I know you were East-ending, but did you happen to hear anything from Rangers or visitors about the status of Siskiwit dock replacement?

Planning a trip end of next month and expecting it to still be going on, but just curious...

Thanks!

Itinerary Advice for omarkoup

Notes/Other: Would love to go to lane cove if the weather is not bad, not sure if my wife is up for that many miles, so I need a backup plan. First time on the Island in 32 years (I said I would be back next year! lol) We do have some experience backpacking Pictured Rocks, many times. And we have h...

Re: TR: 9/23-9/29, 2019 [DF-ECB-HL-MC-MC-LC-RH]

THANKS for this wonderful report. I love the immediacy, and admire your foraging skills (thimbleberries, firewood, apples, a headlamp for exploring the Minong Mine)! I think it's one of dcclark's maxims that you start planning the next IR trip no later than partway through your current one --- have...

Re: Itin Thoughts?

Looks great, I've thoroughly enjoyed all the sites you listed, and I think all have the opportunity for a shelter with the exception of Lane. I was at Lane at the end of the season last year and really enjoyed it. The campsites are nicely secluded from each other. McCargoe is great with lots of shel...
