Re: 5 full days of hiking- Rock Harbor to Windigo

If you'd like to see what the minong is like (esp the beaver dams) check out the video series that my husband and I did on the minong. We wanted to showcase that trail so others knew what to expect. We went rock harbor to windigo and we hit the actual minong on part 5 in the series if you want to s...

Re: 5 full days of hiking- Rock Harbor to Windigo

The plan is to take the Minong, because I have heard more people preferring what the Minong has to offer in regard to campsites. I'm a little hesitant about that trail as I have heard there are several beaver dams that have wrecked havoc to the trail in some sections. Just looking for as much advice...

5 full days of hiking- Rock Harbor to Windigo

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on an upcoming trip I’m looking to book to the island. Last summer I hiked the feldtman loop with my son and it was amazing. I’m looking to do the length of the island the first week of June. I do have quite a bit of hiking/backpacking experience and am looking ...

Re: Feldtmann Loop questions

Any of you ever make the hike to Lake Halloran? Any recent reports as to the condition of this type of hike off trail? Are there any routes that are drier than others? Looking to maximize our opportunity to fish.

Re: Feldtmann Loop questions

I think a twelve-year old will be fine. As for speed, I always assume two miles per hour, including stops. I guess I would stick to that on the two trail legs you ask about. I also think the comparison to the Porkies is interesting. You are 100% correct on the mud in the Porkies. You will get muddy...

Re: Feldtmann Loop questions

Windigo -> Feldtmann: 1 up and down, about 200' elevation, otherwise flat. Feldtmann -> Siskiwit Bay: 1 up and down, about 500' elevation, flat on top of the ridge and either end. Siskiwit -> Island Mine: Flat, then about 700' up. Island Mine -> Windigo (Washington Creek): 700' gradual downhill all...

Feldtmann Loop questions

This is the first time I will be hiking this loop and had a couple of questions for those who've done this a few times. 1. I looked up the mileage on each days hike and know that 8 miles can vary in difficulty and length of time depending on trail conditions. What seems to be the average mph when hi...

First time on IR backpacking-trail advice

Hi All!

My son and I are planning a trip up this labor week. We’re hoping to be hiking 4-5 days on the island. Any recommendations on trail routes? Looking to do some fishing as well.

We will most likely be starting from Rock Harbor.
