Re: Rock Harbor vs. Windigo

After reading Nevada Barr's A Superior Death, I'm even happier we went with Windigo. That's only because you hadn't read Winter Study yet! I actually read Winter Study before we went, and it was interesting to see some of what was described in the book. A Superior Death made Rock Harbor out to be a...

Re: Rock Harbor vs. Windigo

We are not backpackers and greatly enjoyed our three nights in one of the Windigo cabins. If the weather is good, you can rent a kayak/small boat, and although we didn't hike much, I believe there is enough to hike to keep you busy for a few days. After reading Nevada Barr's A Superior Death, I'm ev...

Possible adjustment?

I recently changed my phone's settings to switch to grayscale when I plug it in to charge at night. Although I can easily tell what threads on a board have new posts---it has a small icon---from the main page, I can no longer tell what boards have new posts. The usual blue vs red icon all looks the ...

Re: Windigo side new gift shop/restaurant

They were starting on it when we were there in 2019. It's just past the comfort station. We were told that the old store was going to be converted into additional cabins.

Re: First time visitor

I can't help with the bulk of your questions, but regarding transportation: the VII is out of Grand Portage, the seaplane out of Grand Marais. If you use both, you won't end quite where you began. If you still want to do both, take the VII out so you can bring fuel. There is fuel on ISRO to be bough...

Re: Good article about dragonflies and mercury

Dragonflies can take care of themselves (sometimes). Years ago, I was heading north on the Gunflint trail when one came into my car and hit me on the forehead. It decided to bite me and my head had one heck of a bump for several days. I still respect them, as a part of our kingdom. I was absolutely...

Re: Sea kayak

We stayed on a houseboat on Namakan Lake (VOYA) for three nights last summer. Nothing like you describe. It was quiet and very relaxing and we saw/interacted with fewer people than we did the three nights we spent on ISRO the following week.

Re: Trip Help

Thanks Jerry - This sounds fun! Are those trails reasonable lengths? Any places to buy ice around Washington Creek? Ferry come there? You can get ice at the Windigo store, which is a few minutes (uphill) from the WC campground. The ferry stops at the dock which is very close to the campground, mayb...

I was under the impression that boats rented at Windigo needed to be returned the same day?

Re: TR: late July 2019 - McCargoe to RH with a 6-year-old

Wow! Sounds like a great trip. We stayed in a Windigo cabin with our family, including 5 year old. Maybe next year we'll aim for some backpacking.

Re: TR: 7/2019 Windigo Camper Cabin with kids

1) Barge with excavator and concrete blocks to build new store's foundation. 2) The cabin is not super private, as no shade on door. I meant to mention the lock: electronic 4-digit keycode that they give you, changed between guests, with a master passcode as well. From the inside, lock can be diseng...
