Re: Another First Time IR Backpacker: Itinerary Feedback Requested

I was able to extend my trip to give myself more time. Here's my new plan, but appreciate any suggestions/tips on the below. As always, thanks! Day 0 - Fly to Thunder Bay, Ontario. Drive to Grand Portage Day 1 - Ferry from GP to Windigo; hike to Lake Desor South Campground (11.6 miles) Day 2 - Hike ...

Re: Another First Time IR Backpacker: Itinerary Feedback Requested

Appreciate the feedback, alternative trip options and tips of caution. I've done many day hikes of various mileage, terrains and difficulty levels, but backpacking is fairly new (the mileage and backpacking weight aside, filtering/purifying water, using a backpacking stove, etc), so the insights abo...

Re: Thunder Bay (YQT) as Entry Point

Thanks for the feedback and insights!

I'll be flying into YQT/Thunder Bay, and then renting a car from YQT to drive to Grand Portage. It was much cheaper to fly into YQT, and rental car rates were less expensive than Duluth. When I found out it was closer too (50 min), seemed like an ideal fit.

Thunder Bay (YQT) as Entry Point

Hi there, I'm curious to know if anyone has had any issues arriving/departing from Thunder Bay Airport (YQT)? I read it's the closest airport to the park (50 min?), but I wasn't sure if crossing the Canadian border presented any issues or added time? Assuming I need to bring my US Passport and that ...
