Re: Coronavirus Discussion
The advantage to the Upper Missouri is that you can drive there in your own vehicles and stay isolated to just your immediate companions. For Isle Royale, you can’t avoid the other visitors and staff of the transport mode, unless you have your own boat. If the pandemic has lessened, and your concern ...

Re: Beginner trip for 12 and 9 year old boys
Backyard camp out is a great idea, or maybe a minimal car-camping trip with just your backpacking gear. Keep track of anything that wasn’t used on the overnight, or anything you needed that you didn’t have. Those overnights will give you experience setting up your tent, using your stove, I would eve ...

Cape Cod
Once we get past this pandemic, I would like to visit Cape Cod National Seacoast. Anyone ever spent a car-camping/hiking vacation?

Re: itinerary help
I agree, there are lots of things to do on the eastern end. But, unlike ddclark, I think spending a couple days riding and sightseeing on theVoyager is a great way to see a lot of the island, especially if that is your goal more than racking up lots of miles. I like your plan 2 because you do a ...

Re: Coronavirus Discussion
I’m not that optimistic about May, but hoping for August. Several national parks have announced “closed until further notice”. Yosemite was one, can’t remember the other one I saw.

Nice picture! My next canoe trip will include Chippewa Harbor, so I’m glad to have these ideas.

Re: What happens when you register as a group?
And bear in mind, the rangers do check and are known to be watchful for groups that register as two small parties of 6 or less, then travel and camp together thus avoiding the rules for groups. One big advantage to groups is that you have a reserved site and you will not be uncertain about finding ...

Re: Beginner trip for 12 and 9 year old boys
Yep , you could do a great 3-day trip with kids by spending first night at Rock Harbor. Bag a campsite when your ferry arrives, and spend the afternoon in a rented canoe on TobinHarbor. Next morning hike to3Mile, set up camp and day hike up Mt Franklin for incredible views. Then take your time ...

Yes, if you can get there in a private boat. Public ferry or seaplane are both close-distance contacts

https://seatosummitusa.com/search?q=camp+shower&type=product dclark, this one has worked well for me. It seems to warm up nicely, and packs small. Plus you can use it as a dry bag when not using it for a shower. I have never used it on Isle Royale, but it has worked well at Voyageurs NP and in the ...

Re: Itinerary questions in mid july
Also, the stretch from Daisy Farm to Moskey is a relentless series of clambers up and down rock outcrops. In my experience, it is one of the harder stretches of trail on the island. So if you get to Daisy and are low on either daylight or energy, keep that in mind.

Re: September Weather
The worst September weather I have experienced at Isle Royale, and one other time during a northern Minnesota vacation, is a slow-moving cold front that brings 35-40 degree weather and steady rain for several days straight. If it gets frosty cold, it is usually a quick snap followed by clear and ...

I had exactly the same questions. And, how did a canoe magically appear at Malone Bay and then disappear so they could hike back to Rock Harbor (18 miles mighta been Windigo???) unencumbered?
